What's your take on the Astars Tech Air vest?
I know you need to by the compatible jacket for the vest but I've been wondering about purchasing one. As I'm getting older I'm thinking maybe
it could save some problems in the event of a crash.
Anyhow would be good to get some feedback

The only issue I can see is that like all battery powered things the moment you really need them the battery is flat.
Other than that the more protection you can have the better.

I've been thinking the same thing plus I'm wondering what the on going cost would be like battery replacement and other stuff that might need to be check annually.
I've phone one of the big stores in Sydney and they don't really seem to know much about it

I"m pretty familiar with the Dainese systems. The street jacket is heavier than most jackets with all of the electronics and the air bag. Each system has a GPS, 3 accelerometers, and 3 gyroscopes. It uses this data to create the algorithm's that are used to tell the system when to activate (and also when not to). It's a pretty impressive piece of technology. In the next few years I'm sure you'll see many changes to the systems from both companies but even now it's a pretty proven technology. I have one friend that has the street jacket and a few that have the track suits and have used them for quite a few years now. Don't know anyone with the apinestars system yet it's still pretty new in the US and not many out there. dainese has been selling them in the US for about 5 years now, A* just came out a few months ago?

with Dainese I know they recommend sending it back in every 5 years to check on the software, the integrity of the bag, etc. With the track suits, I know it'll last a weekend without any issue, they recommend plugging it in every month to keep the charge up if it's being stored. I assume the street stuff is similar.

the track suits you can plug it into your computer and download your track data, it's a custom version of the 2D Telemetry that is used in Moto2 racing and is included with the suit. lap times, G-forces, etc. Not 100% sure this is included with the street jackets, but I think it is.

Hey thanks Speedy!
Sounds like the dainese system is a bit more high tech than A* with the gps system.

Haven’t any experience with the dainese or a-star versions, but I’ve crashed twice in a Hit-Air vest. Really thought it did a bang-up job (no pun intended) protecting my trunk and neck during a hard high side and tumble 50+ft.

Activates by cable attached to the bike when you/it separate with >50lbs of pull force. Uses CO2 cartridge. I’ve seen a handful of accidental deployments at the track from riders forgetting to unclip before dismounting.

The “racer” shorty vest with cable on the backside is popular here. I have the full vest because I like the deployed coverage and the CO2 cartridge doesn’t get in my way as some other riders complain.

I believe the tether is a rubber-coated cable...but I’ll have to look at it closer. Will let you know later on that. I do know it has a short, coiled section near the base (~2”) to take up some slack and buffer the immediate accidental deployments. The cable is clipped to a matching loop that is hooked to the frame and secured by a crimping clamp that i put threadlock on.

The cable hasn’t failed for me but the coiled section has lost some of its ‘coiliness’. A section of the cable rubber housing did melt a bit one time I parked the bike and it dangled down against hot parts but the cable fibers are unchanged
