Any Aussies importing tyres?

I am up for new tyres....... again! I want to support the local guys, but !

I can save up to $200 a set by buying on the web and fitting them myself. I'm in the process of making a jig to change my own tyres with little effort, and balancing is no drama either.

I need the jig to change tyres on my track bike anyway, as I get cheap used tyres of a racer friend.
So I can avoid the charges the dealers charge for fitting tyres not bought from them.

What do you think? Is anyone else getting tyres from overseas? Is it worth it and if so, any advice on suppliers.
The price difference is just too big to ignore,

Jakewilson.com is pretty decent

Thanks for that,

Never heard of that site, but it is excellent. And their shipping fees are one of the most reasonable I've seen from the US. Now I'm just going through the usual...what do I buy? Crap

I've always run Pirelli Dragon or SP super corsas for the past six years, but tyre tech has come ahead since then !
So decision time.

yes am deciding whether to go the pirrelli diablo rosso or the metzler M5's... no clue which is better.... love dunlop q2's but want something that drops into corners a lil quicker

I've ridden a 600 with qualifiers on the track and they were great. The Q 2' s were a consideration for this time. So you liked them, they are supposed to be pointier than the old qualifiers.

Why do you feel the need for more on the duke?

I also use Jake Wilson. Great prices and usually less than a week to get here.

Question; I presume the Rosso corsa is the replacement for the corsa III..?

My wife's monster has the standard Rosso's and I don't like them.
I imagine the Rosso corsa is somewhere between the corsa III and the super corsa ?

The couple of times I've gone with an alternative to the super corsa, due to availability problems I've been disappointed and P'd off. Even the BT 003's weren't as good. I know we all feel comfortable on different makes, thus the varied opinions on this fickle subject.

For me the safety outweighs the cost. So although I only get between 2 to 3000 K's on the road from a set of super corsas, and it hurts the back pocket, it's still worth it. I don't commute on the superduke, so it's all mountain kilometers. It may take me five months to do that milage.

I ideally would like to get an additional 1000 k's per set from newer tyre technology with the same feel and grip.
With silica content, and black carbon, and all the other marketing phrases they're using surely this is achievable.

The main prob is there is too much choice out there which confuses consumers, and me!

All impartial opinions would be appreciated!

Indy what sort of K's from the racetec, I'd overlooked them and are probably the single best equal to the supercorsa! Good price too, but I will be trying the web also for prices.

OK, biting the bullet and getting Racetecs tomorrow. After all, Pirelli are made in the Metzeler factory, so am assuming they will be very similar.

Will post opinion after I've tried them out.

Due to rain, I got the first ride in today to scrub the Racetecs. They looked extra shiny, so was careful at first.

On the run home I had some pace on, not quite to the edges but I am feeling good on them.
They feel squishy and the bike "moves" a little due to side wall flex, but no loss of traction at all. The front is weirdly neutral, and you have to turn more deliberately than on some tyres.

Cold and windy today, I ran 32 and 30 psi so I might up the pressure for the next ride. Overall I'm happy and they remind me of the supercorsas, with good feel and feedback.
Front end twitchiness was fairly apparent today, probably due to grip confidence and pushing a bit more than I would have on the old shit M1's. Hmmmm me thinking of steering damper again!

Cheers

Yes I'm.... Ahem! ...a little heavier than you! But all tyres feel a little different, and just take a short adjusting to the feel. I'm happy after today's ride, weather permitting I will get out Sunday before I go to work.
