I always had dogs as a kid and have considered getting one. I could take it to work with me so that wouldn't be an issue but it's the 15 years of commitment that puts me off. If I did a English Springer Spaniel would be on the cards. Always had them when I was young and love how mad they are

Had 3 Setters over the years. So soft, so loveable. Chloe,my Gordon ,was a dream. One of the worst moments, and most moving in my life. She was put down with heart failure. Held her as she slipped away.
If you don't get dogs it's a shame. Best company you may ever get. Miss em all.
Now working long days and can't give the time to own one. Just hope I retire fit and healthy enough to own one more.

I'v always had German Sheapherds; fantastic dogs, loyal, smart and are very protective with heaps of energy to boot (dont buy the show dogs with the slant back and hip displacea, the working type like the police force uses).

Although recently (2 years ago) I got a Leonberger, very cute and fluffy but stong as an ox with similar markings to a sheapherd. At 2 years old he weighs 95kg, all muscle and just plain big, they are a mountain/sea rescue dog, very loyal but wants to be by your side wherase the sheapards like to be at a distance so they can see you and the surroundings to make sure you are ok.

Oh and they are good for small properties as they are exhausted after 5 mins (literally), my 12yr old sheapherd runs rings around him (although she is in freakishly good condition for her age an only looks like a 6 yr old sheapard).

Two very different characteristics but love em both to bits

Cats walk and can also feed themselves, brry their own poo and if not asleep can also help keep the small land mamal population in order. They are also self cleaning and dribble less than dogs.

I do get why people like dogs but I have never wanted one myself. My next pet will be a cat.

Had a Pitbull Terrier for ten years. My best friend and it tore me up when I had to pit her down due to cancer. The wife and I now have two female Dalmatians and they are some of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. Quirky, loyal, and smart. When we got the first one, we were told they only shed twice a year; six months in the winter, and six months in the summer.

However I will never forgive the cunt for stealing my doughnuts and I won't be crying for sympathy when he dies. He's a dog nothing more nothing less.

I've had German Shepherds, including a Shep/Malamute cross who insisted on sleeping on top of his doghouse even at -20F! Had a female Leonberger that went with the ex, great companion dogs.
Current living companions include a Jack Russell Terrorist, aka "thug in a clown suit" as one breeder puts it, and an American Bulldog mix. The JRT is hell on wheels around anything small and furry, has caught and killed squirrels, and once dragged home a rabbit bigger than her (she's 16 #).

We had to say goodbye to our little boy last week.

He had been bravely fighting kidney failure, and been surprising the vet months ago when by all rights he should have been at death's door, when instead he was running around, having fun and enjoying life.

Unfortunately last week he took a steep turn for the worse, and he stopped eating and just lost his zest for life.
We had to let him go, and he went peacefully at the vet in our arms.
I've never been so distraught in all my life.

He was such a fantastic dog, a real character. We'll miss his funny, slightly retarded ways!!

RIP Fester

The coolest thing about dogs is that there is a breed for everybody. I love sight hounds. For me there is nothing cooler than the body shape of greyhounds, etc.
I see a guy walking 3 toy poodles and I wonder what the hell is he thinking? To each his own.
I am sure he loves those poodles as much as I love my dogs.
Recently while looking for a place to live in Mexico, my GF and I figured out that we were actually looking for a place for the dogs. As soon as we went to a property, we set out to see if the dogs would be happy there.
Pathetic, huh?

We have two Italian Greyhounds. The female is about 4.5 kilos and the male is about 9 kilos. The female is the fastest and I have clocked her with radar at 47kph! We also have a fooking crazy Border Collie. Completely spastic!
Here are the IGs.
Image
Found this SD related pic from when I first got my bike.
Image

MrZ, got any videos of your dogs taking out the taipans and browns? It took me a while to get comfortable (if that's the word?) handling those and I would love to see how they go about eating them without being bitten.

Viking, be sure to get your dogs teeth cleaned. Sight hounds are notorious for having bad choppers.
In the last two weeks I had both of my dogs teeth cleaned and each had 4 and 6 extraction with nasty infections through and into their nasal passages. I take very good care of my dogs and this still happened. Make me feel like a shit for not noticing it sooner.
I didn't need to spend the two grand this close to a move either but we love our dogs don't we??

Don't I know it.

I brush her teeth twice a week with a dry toothbrush and she's on a part raw diet so gets lamb bones, chicken thighs etc daily. Keeps them in good nick for a hound. They're still a mess when you see her next to the rottie next door though.

I've got a vid of me sending her after a deer and calling her off the chase and recalling back. It'd from a mobile though so isn't too great. Haven't got any kill vids, just the odd photo after she's dispatched it.

Cracking looking IG's. Look well muscled and in good shape.

We give our Staffy 1/2 a Denta stick every night for her teeth. Had her at the vet for a check up and the vet said that she is picture perfect. I was a bit worried about her teeth as sometimes she eats a little bit of sweet stuff But her main diet is raw chicken wings, chicken legs and chum dried dog biscuits.

Unfortunately no bids either... I only know they killed them because my shepherd likes to share half the kill with me and will leave it the back door for me. The Leo would end up dead if he tried to kill one... Not smart or fast enough... The shepherd is the smart one.

when living on acreage, she would run for hrs on end and had no trouble keeping up with my go kart that could do 60kph.... She is getting old though now at 12 years (but she is in good shape, looks like an 8 year old) and still keeps the 2 year old Leo in line. I know I will be devastated when she goes... Best dog ever (the shepherd). All the leo can do is cute, loving, very fluffy.. Genuine dufis

I love my little buddies 2 rotties and a pit quite the pack. They are very trained and my big male rot Oden is a gentle giant.I don't know what I would do with out them.No matter what kind of day I have had they find away to cheer me up.
They know when I am hurting and seem to try to comfort me.One thing for sure I pity the fool that jumps into my yard in the middle of the night.
Oden is the one I count on to protect my wife he loves her so much he is gentle but I have seen the side that you don't want to be on when we had some jerks in the block and came to door. They had to go thru a closed gate that said no salemen to get there my wife told them to go away. They started to talk shit the next thing Oden let them know get the fook out 120 lbs of rottie giving you the eye. They left rather quickley after that.I wish I would have a video of that.I love rotties they know who to let in by your body language.

My German shepphurd is now 7 months old and is a couple of uses for example, last week the bloke who lives behind my house decided to come banging on my door at 11pm and then proceed to threton my mrs who is home alone. Much to his suprise one of my dogs party tricks is opening doors, need less to say he wasn't the big I am when he had 40kg of muscle and teeth very pissed off At him. It was nice to know though with one command of 'down' from the mrs he was flat on his belly between her and the bloke. The funny thing is he came over as he thought I was my dog out barking, I guess at least now he knows first hand what my boy sounds like lol

So if you want a dog that is loyal and will protect you won't go far wrong with a GSD.
