Belly pan bling

Here's my just arrived carbon bellypan. I got Skidmarks to lay up a carbon one instead of the usual GRP version.

Seems like it needs a bit of work to get it fitted, you need to drill all the holes and also it's made for the bike without a side-stand so I need to see whether this is possible to retain the stand. Seem to remember that Klinky has done this on his old bike.

Fairly good quality carbon, but not up to Akrapovic standards. Quite a few little air pockets where the first gel coat is missing but I'll just fill them with chemical metal before I matt it all down to fit with the rest of the bike.

You'll need thermal protection in there Bic or you are going to have serious melting issues. You can dremel a section out to make it work with side stand. I used washers to shim the side stand bracket out a bit to give some extra clearance for the side stand as well.

They did supply a load of heat shielding but it's pretty thin stuff. I was going to see if I can get some pucker stuff from internet. The other option is to cut away the close sections of belly pan - I'm not fitting it to act as a race/oil catcher so not bothered if there's holes in the bottom.

Replicast, not Skidmarx?

Well, that's what is interesting. I order the bodywork from the Replicast website and also spoke to a few people there about the order and the delay in getting it to me.

When it turns up there are two photocopied A4 sheets in with the package of brackets and bolts. One of them is a page with three black and white photos on showing where each of the brackets attaches to the bike. The other one is a headed letter which explains how to apply the heat shield. Name on the letter head is Skidmarks with a Weymouth address.

So which company have I actually done business with?

Skidmarx do one too. I only know this as I rang them and they confirmed they do a race bellypan. Not on their website though.

That isn't a race pan though. They told me on the phone they definitely did a race version.

Probably the Replicast one then, hence Bic's.

Rang Replicast the other day and ordered new fixing kit as part of mine broke. This arrived today. Think this puts it to bed. Skidmarx are making the belly pan for Replicast.

That's exactly the same kit and photocopy I got with my "Replicast" belly pan.

So yes, there's something going on here - must be some sort of mould sharing arrangement I'd have thought so that both companies can make money using the same tools. After all the mould must have cost a bit to produce and they probably didn't sell that many really - not even in the good old Superduke Battle days - not enough to make it financially viable/break even anyway.

Anyway, I don't care who makes it as long as it is good quality and fits.

Here's the bike with the Replicast carbon bellypan fitted. All carbon now matted down to the same finish. Looks much better IMO!

Looks good with leather seat material.

WOW, simply the nicest SD look I've seen. I'm not much the blingologist and most bling sings too loud. You have created a case for untold amounts of non-discretionary drachma and or the pouring of a plethora of poundage into the pit we all call the Superduke and no-one has succeeded as successful.

sets off the carbon fiber..
I'm curious if the leather seat

I have been toying with the idea of painting on Flying Tiger sharks teeth. It's been done before - on other bikes - but it really suits the SD. Amy keeps telling me to "Grow up!'

This is just a photoshop look to see. Opinions please

No rush! Really, whenever you get round to it. I owe you one anyway for that favour the other week. Anyway, I have this strange feeling that the '06 hangers are maybe different to my '07 ones? Mainly because when I was fitting the Replicast bellypan, I didn't need the cylindrical spacers as they showed on the instructions - and the picture looks different to my hangers. We'll see.

In my opinion, eave the engine, it looks great as it is, you have achieved a really nice balance, too much black and it would look vulgar

I think the spring reminds of the KTM blood in a subtle way

good job!

What about the sharks teeth on the belly pan ? Would look cool I reckon ....

Viking

Viking

2013-08-27 13:28:00 UTC

Other options I think would look ok , a smaller version on the headlight cowl and/or tone down the white of the teeth and eyes to a shade of grey similar to the engine or exhaust to create a bit of balance
Tone down the whole scheme to match the matt black.

Bottom line for any bike decoration is its all in the eye of the beholder. Some will like it, some won't. The important thing is if you like it, do it. Assuming you are using vinyl graphics, worse case scenario you can rip em off if they turn out pox.
