Australia passed a couple of bills last night to force cigarette packaging to be plain Olive from July next year:

The new packaging looks kind of military, could be popular with the Rambo/Arnold S types

Sorry, I work for Qld Health. No sympathy for smokers. I think with smoking related pathology, the user pays!

it's all hypocrisy anyway, they insist on plain packaging, ugly photos, no advertising etc. yet rake in millions in taxes, i wonder what minuscule % of that tax actually goes into anti smoking campaigns or education programs, and i'm almost certain nowhere near enough of it is divided up among the hospitals that need it.
It's all well and good to say "user pays" because yes, the health system is as clogged with smoking related illness as smokers arteries but where do you draw the line? some say the motorcycle community are temporary citizens and deserve what we get when we get cleaned up by distracted drivers, the majority of smoking victims in health care today took up the habit long before the ill effects were advertised to the public.

I am a smoker.
I invite you to quantify the " the financial burden for the rest of we taxpayers" vs the tax the govt continues to take on tobacco products.
You could even use the ASH analysis as a comparator, where they've decided in their objective analysis to not include many +ve financial costs because it would cause a 'perverse' result. i.e. one that doesn't suit them.
