Many of us here have owned a GSX-R at some time or another (or several ...), and let's be honest, if Suzuki (or Kawasaki, or Yamaha - but we KNOW Honda never would) wanted to build a bike to take down the likes of an S1000R or RSV4 - they are certainly capable.

And you know what? If it had all the goodness that GSX-Rs usually do - as in no bullshit "midrange torque" compromises - with comparable power and electronic brilliance available on the top euro-nakeds or ZX-10R - I would buy one.

And before you start going off about "character" and torque numbers, it's because you probably haven't ridden a GSX-R1000 WFO. BTW, any year GSX-R1000 crushes a 990 in torque, and gives only about 5 ft-lbs to an RC8R, which isn't even close in HP, at least not one built since about 2003.

I'm waiting for the FZ09 to be taken up a few notches. My only fear is that the new fray seemed to be lowering ride height a tad too much. Leave the Ducati for the vertically challenged, I would not buy one anyway, let Yamaha rise to the occasion. I'm interested in that new 1290 KTM has out but I hear it's plagued with deficiencies.
I have never owned a real sport bike, Suzuki could and will build a sweet UJM in this new GSXSRS-R.

If Suzuki would have had a current model SV1000 I would have bought that instead of my superduke.

Hell, even an updated air cooled bandit 1250 would have been nice.

I started on a 77 GS750 (*with a fair bit of engine work) and had a GS1100 and eventually an 1150. Suzuki knows how to build engines, they just need to create a new Godzilla.

If it's a high revving I4 though I'm not interested. Inline fours are great on the track but they just pull like a train, it's hard for me to exploit that type of power on the street without being double over the limit.

I have to say last time I was in Belgium I got invited for a spin with a few people I known for ages.
One of the chaps lent me his GSXR1000 and it was a while since I rode one.
Still heaps of fun and I enjoyed every second of the ride!
Brilliant bike no matter what the critics say, very fast and smooth and none of the electronics BS. On hind sight maybe I should have got that instead of the wobbler.
Would have saved $7 K in the process too.

rode a K3 and a K5 quite extensively in the past , I totally agree with what you are saying...
A 1290 woudnt get anywhere near a K5
I suppose thats the reason that BMW copied it to make the RR.
Got my eye on this new suzuki , it'll be a shit load cheaper too I should imagine

Suzuki makes a great motor, I owned a 2001 Gixxer 1K and really loved the power. My best friend has a 2008 Gixxer 750 track bike which is also very good.. I hope they make the Naked bike, The more to choose from is better for all of us buyers..

I've had the fever wanting a orange 1290 for months now but this Suzuki is something to think about while I wait and wonder when/if my KTM dealer gets one in.
I love that other manufactures are getting into the naked catagory.

I had a stealth K5 gixer 1000 for several years.

Great track tool but on the road mh old 990 was much more fun.

I also have a ZZR1400 if we want to talk about torque and power but the SD is more fun than that as well. Recently I test rode the BMW R1000sssss or whatever it's called and the old 990 was more fun than that as well!

On the road for me the immediate hit of the V twin provides more amusement than any amount of top end power and my grin bike will be a 990 SD for the foreseeable future

How any of you guys compare an inline four to a V twin is beyond me,,,,,,I only ever owned two, a Benelli Quatro,,,and a FZR 400,,,the Quatro was sporting enough for what it was,,no wobbles out of that thing,,,the FZR I never really found what was there up on top,,,had the thing up to 135 and ran out of room,,,both the fours ran so fricken hot ! the Benelli was normal for the time wide,,,,the Yam was a blast , but on a hot day you were frying frome the heat,,,when I sold off the multies I had enough of them ,,twins are a better road bike all in all ,,,,,perhaps a triple, but thats where I will draw the line,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Will "re-tuned" actually mean de-tuned? If its the GSX-R motor from the sportbike then I'm interested otherwise couldn't care less.

I owned an early 1200 Bandit which was a detuned gsxr basically and was huge fun but the later ones became tamer and cheaper built. I had her for 5 years and passed it onto my brother who had her for another 8 years and I'll always look back and have good memories of her

have had 5 gsxr's in the past and luved every one, 3x 750's an 1100 and a 1000 k5 for short time, last 3 bikes have all been v twins, 916, tuono factory and the now superduke r, if I was younger it defo have another one but to be honest ive no use for all that power, find the twins a load of fun without been an out and out maniac on it lol

This is subjective, but another thing for me, is I prefer the low frequency vibration of a twin to the high frequency vibration of an inline 4. There are some bikes that dampen/isolate vibration of any sort very well. But I in general like to have a little bit of sensation of the engine. And to me, the twin configuration has the frequency I prefer.

I will never deny the speed of an il4 but they are motors that (in general) lack character. Give me a v-twin any day of the week unless its a track day. I have only ever heard 3 IL4's that i actually like (brutale, f4 and the k1300r) whereas most v-twins just sound nice.

The other thing i love about the sd (and most vtwins) is the instantaneous punch out of corners on a tight winding mtn road, its something that an IL4 cant do... the type of road where the fastest thing is a motard (love motards too).

The guys going on about the bucket loads of torque from IL4s are missing the point.. it is the way that torque is delivered on a twin.

looks alright but is it too little too late? others have been making these for years.
its abit like the harley livewire, weird, produced at a strange time and out of date before it hits the street, this engine has been around for ages. yeah they changed it a little in 2009 but 2009!!! why wait 5 years to chuck out a naked? (am willlling to be corrected if they have released something but i aint heard of it.)

rip b-king it was an aquired taste but my god that was a good motorcycle.

and yes retuned engine means more mid range and less top end. it wont be slow by any means but there are loads of other bikes i can think i want to ride before a zuki nudey. good luck to them with this. should have waited for the next R.

Worth noting also, the big-gix is finally getting TC. 3-mode, like Kawi's. Who wants to bet they licensed it from Kawasaki? Don't kid yourself - it's how Japanese do business, and nothing new about Kawi and Suzi in bed together.
