Does the 1290 replace the 990 or compliment it?

Simple question, looking for a straightforward answer. Are 990 owners selling their 990's when they get the 1290 or keeping them? Are they different enough that its nice to have both, or is it just redundant and the 1290 is just better?

I'm sort of asking so I know what to expect in the future and how I'll feel towards my 08 SDR after picking up the new one

Get something totally different than the 990. It's nice to have options. Every bike has it own unique character.

Dude, the SF1098 is a fooking bitch to ride at anything other than breakneck speeds.

If you thought the 990 had a jerky throttle response, wait til you get on a 1098. They buck and shudder like an epileptic whore. Plus the exhaust kicks your right heel waaaaay out, it actually started hurting my ankle after an hours ride.

That would be the worst bike to commute on lol.

For me the stats speak for themselves.
12 months of 1290 ownership saw 6000 km on it while I managed a total of 300 km on the 990.
Bikes although different are effectively the same and easy to switch from one to the other and settle in quick.
Yeh the 1290 is better everywhere but the 990 is still no slouch.
Finally put the 990 on the market as I find no real point in keeping it as it pretty much does the same thing (for me at least).
Go something totally different that you would use.

So what are we looking at?
What's the next bike going to be?
I'm excited for you!

If I was in the market I would be complimenting my 990 Superduke and F800gs with either a KTM exc or a Norton Commando. We gots to have them dreams..!

Interesting comments on the SF 1098. I had a SD and then SDR (also 1098S). The SF will have to go some to be as brutal as the SDR. Like others have said, the big SF is hard to find and prices are quite high. Still, I'm looking for one as well.

This one is by far the best looking SF1098 I've ever seen.

Whole album here:

Dunno, they don't really do it for me, probably the dullest looking Ducati currently available and that area around the lower cylinder is a mish mash of shapes.
Remember reading somewhere that the total sales of all models of SF in Oz was less than 30.
Can't ever say I have seen one on the street.

Here's a pic of my previous machine. She was beautiful and sounded like a demon, but she was also a real bitch to ride. The fueling was horrible (worse than the 990 SDR) until I uncorked her and tuned the ECU. I never did come to grips with the vague front end feel, ridiculous front brakes, and nervous chassis. After my second lowside due to lack of front end feel I decided to sell her. I literally lost the desire to ride after owning the 1098SF. In my opinion, my new to me 990 SDR is by far a superior motorcycle. It's more balanced, more stable, more predictable, more comfortable, more confidence inspiring, and MORE FUN. After a week of ownership I already feel like I can ride the wheels off this thing and my love of riding has returned. There's a reason the Ducati SF didn't sell well...it's because it kind of sucks. Keep your KTM's.

The SF was the only bike I was intersted in, mainly because of the looks.
But now I've read this I just keep my SD
Thanks bro[/quote]

You are most welcome my friend. To each their own, but I honestly think you would be severely disappointed with the SF.
