Go Pro Silver (or what used to be the go pro2) should be enough if you want pics and video, if you just want video go pro white is more than good enough.

You need a decent PC/Mac though otherwise you will not be able to view/edit icore 3 or better.

Also don't trust the suction cup mount that comes with one of the kits.
On a related note i'm in the market to replace my GoPro

I've used a few different models of both GoPro and Contours" I kind of like the Contour, with it's somewhat narrower Field-of-View (FOV) - depending on model and mode, 125 to 135 degrees.

I don't buy these things, as they depreciate instantly (faster than cell phones) ... So many around, that I borrow them (price is usually some decent drink, or people stick theirs on my bike - presumably to see what stupid looks like). Done with the promise that if I crash it, I own it. Most events here have rentals too.

The super wide FOV that some of these cameras have, really seem to distort the sense of speed; as in, things look slower than they actually are.

No matter how you mount the camera, I can only encourage safety wiring it to the bike.

Gopro is the dogs....

As said Gopro 2 is enough......

If you notice ....this is what the BBC use for all the action / wild life hard to get shots

Gopro hands down.

Contour-you pretty much have to use all the gopro mounts, the better FOV of the GOPRO is way better, but contour is more idiot proof.

Like I say GOPRO 2 is the old version but still perfectly capable with 1080p recording and takes 5mp photos,

Gopro then brought out the:

White-basic model
Sliver-(what was the old go pro 2 with a better lens and inbuilt wifi)
Black-the best one comes with wifi remote and a few extra modes.

I have the black but the battery does not last long, if you buy the silver(or black) there is an app on your phone where you can switch it on/off and change all the settings, great bit of kit.

But seriously if you just after recording the odd thing for posterity get the old GOPRO 2 the battery lasts much longer sure you can pick em up for about £150 now.

I disagree that they do not hold value though.

For those that arn't keen on paying for GoPro's marketing, have a look at this.
I did a bit of research and read reviews before I bought one for myself. It looks like a rip off of the GoPro 2, but people who have compared them side by side say the video quality is better on the Action Pro, and no software glitches http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=CM-7200

so have a look into it for yourself, it's another option.

GoPro.
It's not all hype. There is a reason the BBC and loads of other documentary companies use them.

I don't know about you guys but I struggled for a sweet spot to mount the GoPro directly to the bike without all the anglepoise bracketry and Heath Robinson kit getting on my way. I went for the spot just above the radiator filler cap on the black vertical panel. Despite the heat it's proven a reliable spot for four Trackdays now. The glue on the pad is still bonded well. This position gives me forward view together with a bit of the bike mask. Which I like.

Has anyone got any better ideas? Cheers.

Mount on the handle bars (Between Clamps) with a Gopro Roll bar mount (just need to cut down knob on one side of bracket) so it does not foul the top clamp

Gives a great veiw plus you can just see speedo / rev counter

Sucker on tank works ok ......but you need to add a safety lanyard ....just in case (sucker on tank is ok until you fit DNA3 or Motorhooligan air filter....as the Deeeeep base note distorts the picture)

I (and a few others) fund the mountainbike "seat post mount" good for the bars, no cutting required.
