A guy I know did very well in open class on a RG500 at Loudon. Only one on the grid as they weren't many if any in the States at that time

The old 500 was a stand out bike back then every were I would go there would be people hanging around looking at it made me a bit nervous worried some one would steal the thing. One time I even had salesmen in a Yamaha dealer ship come out of the shop and just stare at the thing asking me questions about it. Yes it was like being a GP star LOL!! The main reason that the RG500 didn't do real well in racing was that the top expansion chambers were way to close to the rear tyre there was about a 1/4" gap on each side so this restricted the size of the tyre you could stick in there.
On my bike I had 1/4" on one side and on the other side it was nearly touching so I packet the expansion chamber out with some washers. Suzuki quality control

Yeah, I remember when they came out and I just thought "wow" ,88bhp and 180kg. My GPZ900 at the time weighed about 230kg I think, can't remember what the power was.

Seems funny in retrospect, my CBR 600 had 118bhp and was 154kg

RG500 weighed 156kg dry. The funny thing was that when you hit the power band it was like doing warp speed as all the scenery started to blur as it went past

I remember riding one of the very first Yamaha 500LCs in the UK, it was like a step into the future compared to the overweight slow revving 4 strokes around at that time................

These 2 stroke posts are making me really crazy.....................................................................

As a once (and future ???) RD and RZ owner, there are times when I miss the smoke. But, I was younger and of course knew everything back then. Now, I occasionally go look at one for sale and can only think of vintage racing it. As bitchin' as these anachronisms are, I haven't gotten sentimental enough to put one in the garage.

I would not delve deeply into that racing heritage. They are wonderful to fawn over, that is where I would draw the line.
I purchased a very good shape RD 200 a couple years ago and would take it out for a thrashing, which by the way is the onky way it wanted to run, once a blue moon.
I like the fact that you do not break the bank or have much invested in nostalgia and after sixteen miles on a small finnicky pile of history you can wheel into the garage and forget about it for another six months.
I have had the pleasure of putting quite a few piles of shit up for addoption thru the years and when they leave a tear is never shed. I open my wallet to another loosing venture and smile all the way to the wrecking yard to buy replacement broken parts. When I see these works of art at the races, the pleasure is all mine as I walk away thinking "Sucker".
Anyone want a Honda Dream hee hee, how bout a ATC 200?
pyle of shit YZ125?, how bout a 450 Nighthawk?
I have lost more cash on overpayment of my must have,in 07,SuperDuke than all the piles of nostalgia that have graced my shop floor. None worth keeping sept the SD.

Was just discussing this with friend that had and raced three RG500s,(among many others), in the eighties. He would love to find one now and is disgusted that he sold his last Walter Wolf for six grand knowing what they're selling for now.
According to him race tuned RG500s were capable of 120-130hp when built by the right people and weights were significantly less in race trim than road going equivalents... someone misses his old race bikes.

Spent the afternoon drinking beer, talking bikes, and listening to stories about racing with the likes of Jamie James, Doug Polen, Duhamel etc. Not a bad way to spend a blustery winter day...
