Sorry mate, I don't know anyone in the mines. But I would start looking in Western Australia, as that is the place people seem to go for those jobs.?

Good luck with it.

Check these out:

Hope u get some ideas there.
I work for ARG 'Australian Railroad Group' as a Locomotive Driver, so i have a bit of contact with mining.
The mid-west of Western Australia is going through massive growth with mining [mainly iron ore]
The Pilbara area of Western Australia is also booming.

Try Queens land, the need for skilled or any workers over there is on the up. Ill do my best to avoid the west coast if i can, Boring state. But if you just want to work then its one of the places to be.

Hi, there,

As someone who moved to aussie twice I can trow in a few pointers.

It normally works out easier if you can apply a skill to look for a job in the mines. The days that you just showed up and they gave you a shovel and showed you where to dig is over.
Now you need all sorts of tickets for health and safety etc. even to sit on a chair you need a ticket and a safety belt.... funny but true.
Here in Qld they always are going on about blue and white tickets, I'm sure you can find more out on the internet.

If you have a skill that they need most mining companies will help you sort this all out for you and even go to such lenghts as to find a job for your missus on site or help you relocate.
Have a search on the above mentioned job sites and also on seek.com.au. I don't know of anyone who actually found a job via this site ( I think it is a load of bollocks and a marketing tool) but it will give you an idea of the type of jobs mines are looking for.

Hope this helps.

the potential for earning is better in WA at the moment, however gladstone (QLD) is about to boom with the LNG sector.

Personally if it only the money you are after, go to WA it is a pretty place with great beaches (non developed) but all the roads are straight... in queensland we are on the great dividing range which means thousands of kilometers of twisties

at the moment i am an engineer on a coal refinery in blackwater QLD but am not sure whether im going to go back into pipelines.

Some advice ---
The best thing you can do when you arrive is get yourself a cheap van as housing can be very expensive or unavalable in the mining areas, even the locals in the Pilbara reigon cant afford rent as the demand for employees housing has outstripped supply.
We have a lot of seasonal work in the agricultural reigons picking fruit or vegetables that seems to attract the backpacker types that can be quite hard and low paid, but a lot of folks, locals included follow the harvest trail and enjoy the itinerant lifestyle.
You will probably find your Irish accent would be greatly appreciated for call center work if you can handle that line of work.
A heavy truck licence can open a lot of doors for you as well as any skills in construction or welding.
Good luck mrduke!

Get your arse over here (WA) on a 3 month rural working visa. Piece of cake to get a farm job to start with (as all the usual labourers have gone to the mines) once here try for a mine job. Everyone thinks they can just walk into one but it is usually a bit harder than that. Some companies like Orica, BGC, McMahon that contract for the bigger mines are a good foot in the door as are some of the construction companies. If you are just after the $$$ construction is the way to go but rosters are pretty crappy, like 4 weeks on one week off. Rest of the mine rosters are starting to become equal time, usually 8/6 (days). FIFO (fly-in, fly-out) is a shit lifestyle but a ok way to earn a bit of cash.
