Thanks to Superdan for the heads up. Right on cue at 21.35 it appeared from the west moving east right between the moon and Jupiter. Was very bright and really easy to see. Man was it getting a lick on! Ended up looking up with envious eyes, must be incredible to be up there gazing down on earth while flying through space at 17.200mph. Lucky fookers.

It's cool to watch. A bright dot speeding along with people on it. Amazing what we can do when you think we were all living in caves not so long ago!

Slow moving, therefore easy to spot. A lot bigger than a "dot" - you can make out some of its features with the naked eye (~400+ km up). While best viewed at dusk or dawn, it's pretty huge-appearing, even in broad daylight.
At my latitude, you can often see it once/day, for several days in a row. It appears that right now, in much of the UK, daily viewing may be possible for the next several days (conditions permitting).
To determine when/where to see the ISS, this is good place to start: http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/

Normally I would have been able to see something like that quite easily up here (quite often get the Northern lights on show)
But tonight there as no point for me to have bothered looking, as had http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-22172446 all day/night! Could see feck all on the way to work this avo. It was worse than a lot of the sandstorms I've seen out in the Gulf!
