New Project

Well 2014 has been somewhat a stellar year for me as far as motorcycles go.
A new 1290 in january, 85 Ducati MHR Mille in May and have just picked up a 2011 Triumph 800XC ABS with 17k km and most of the bling as a repairable right off for $4300 at a disposal auction. Priced up replacement parts for an extra $2k. Just need a small dent in the tank patched and sprayed, so should have a good as new bike for sub $7k.
WIfe was none too pleased but as the old saying goes "it's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission". She's all good now. Only thing is I have now promised to sell the 990 before putting it on the road.
Look like it was at least used for its intended purpose and was fairly fitlhy but a strip back and lots of WD40, rags, compressed air and time has got it looking pretty good.
This is my first Triumph and must say that build quality is pretty good and seems fairly sturdy, most plastics are cheap and sacrificial where it counts.
Oddly parts sourced from the US are a fair bit cheaper than the UK and Oz
All in all sould be a good bike to start some ADV touring on and hopefully get to see some great country side where dirt roads abound in these parts.

Nice looking bike.

At least you won't be the first person to dump it off road if it ever happens, so it wont hurt as bad.

I've ridden a street triple and they go really good and actually handle well but I still won't buy one the Speedy scared me of Triumph.

Well I have only ridden this from the back of the ute to the workshop with flat tyres so can't really comment on riding yet but just going over the thing KTM could get some welding tips on framework off them, frame paint is solid and stainless fasteners and clamps through out. This thing has had a flogging off road and it appears to have held up well.
The rest I will find out in due course.

Plus if I don't like it can always sell it. ADV market is big here at the moment and demand is good. Should even make a bit on it. And it gives me something to do for a bit.

I purchased a F800gs a while back ago. I've been fairly happy with it. It's opened up a bunch of tight shity roads the Superduke would just not be fun on at all. So far I have no regrets purchasing an adventure bike...can't complain. It's keeps PaPa centered.

Triumph have come a long way since their "re-launch" and comparing a 2006 bike with a 2013 isn't much relevant. If you compare a recent Triumph with a recent KTM, I'd have more faith in the Triumph for reliability (check the recent forums on the 1290 if you haven't already). The britts have come a long way since their "re-launch" and if they built crappy bikes the company wouldn't be growing like it is (one of the rare very few companies who keep increasing sales even during tough economic times).

What's in a name?
I think the Triumph triples are spectacular bikes and the company has held it's own since it's reins urgency into a tough market. Triumph and Harley should not be considered the same in the category of purchased for the name only. That would surely hold to Harley Davidson, not Triumph. Look how many different models and styles Triumph Motorcycles has created, from winning the Daytona 200 to a great air cooled twin with clean retro looks they do not seem to be resting on their laurels. I would love the bike and if given the chance to pick one up at that super discounted price would only be pissed off that I aint got the dosh.
Ride it and smile and fucktherest of these naysayers.

The new Triumph boni look nothing like the old boni I find this really disappointing even though for some reason buyers think its just like a old style Triumph.
The Kawasaki w650 looks more like a old English built bike so if you put a triumph badge on the Kawasaki they would sell heaps so yes its in the name..
Anyhow Triumph are made in Thailand so its not a real Triumph

the 800 is a great all round bike , the haters are out of date , these are nothing like the 955's and old trips , they've sold droves of these things in the UK , a couple of my pals have 20k miles on theres and accept for the reg/recs they are a good bike.
really easy to run of the end of tyres too , have fun
