Is that it for the tax disk then? I renewed my Honda last week and got an email saying:
'The law has changed, you no longer need to display a tax disk therefore we're not going bother sending you one, or update our files, the police will stop you and treat you like a criminal by the roadside, haul you in front of a grumpy judge who will bark that it's ALL YOUR FAULT! before grudgingly not giving you six points..'
Or something.

So where's the other part of the story, the one that explains that the tax collection job is now being taken over by the automated license plate scanning systems they're putting into all patrol cars.

The Gov in their wisdom instituted this about 3 years ago in West Australia and introduced license plate readers for cop cars.
Trouble was that even if the car was one day out of rego it would flag the car (allowed upto a month before renewal).
Cops wasted so much time chasing just expired rego's that in the end they binned the system.

You no longer need to display it.
You can pay by direct debit.
The prices are apparently going to be rising soon.
When selling/buying a new vehicle the current tax no longer goes with the vehicle, so the seller gets a rebate and the buyer must renew when they buy.
If on SORN and keeping it on there, you no longer need to renew the SORN.
Not sure when the ANPR cameras will flag it up, as atm (when you needed a disc) you had a 15 day "saving grace" period (whether this was an official rule, or one of those "let it slide" rules, idk)

I haven't displayed a tax disk on my bike for about 3 years. They know instantly if you are taxed so it's a waste of space.
