Always a bad move....
I had a bingle on the freeway in Melbs and tore my pants off, wore through my helmet and boot.
Both knees were back to the metal and my hips and arse were shredded. I broke my cocix and was limping for a loooong time.
The only part that was ok was my upper body covered in an old mars leather jacket... They are awesome.
I still forgot and rode with jeans but am getting better as I get older, so I have a couple of pairs now.
I bought KTMGuy's Draggin's earlier this year and they paid for themselves as I binned it on a ride with Scam66, tore a hole in the left knee but really saved me considering the speed and gravel...

That's kinda stupid , especially when I'd imagine he gets a lot of gear to try and promo, he was just being fashionable, instead of dressing for protection. You don't always have to power ranger up when you go for a quick blast, but at least put something on underneath your jeans. I use bohn body armor underneath my jeans and it takes about a min to put on or take off. He really should know better

Well written article, I agree with his attitude on gear.

When I go for a "ride",the minimum I wear on my legs is Draggin jeans, but if I'm just going to the shop to grab a bite for lunch,I'll throw on whatever jeans are closest and my textile enduro jacket.

I'd hate to see compulsory minimum riding gear by law, because then everything we buy has to have a "special" tag
and that means a "special" price.

Everyone does the chance versus consequence math, we all did it when we decided to ride bikes,
It's part of the freedom we should allways have as humans.

I've met Wes a couple of times - great writer and clearly great rider - but boy what a daft sod!

Thanx Maddog.
Good article and helps keep us focused on reality.
Been there, gravel in the hip took three years to disappear.
I like the Bohn idea. Good post. I wonder if he had his damper set correctly?

Seeing as is what Colin Edwards' leathers looked like after his puck fell off on the last GP, imagine if he was in jeans (fair enough, I'm sure he wouldn't have been dragging his knee....)
