I traded a Hypermotard last Saturday for a black SD-R. My local dealer refused the trade so I had to go about 50 miles back to the dealer I bought the Hyper from. The new Ducati's have such terrible lean surge issues I think I'm done with them unless they do can something about it.
The test ride impressed the hell out of me, and I have seen nothing in 200 miles to change my initial impression. This thing feels as solid as my BMW GS seemed, but with a lot more character and style. The seat is MORe comfortable to me than the GS, or at least equal. How is that even possible? I love the ergos and the engine, and I have yet to even dip a toe into the available power. I have an enthusiasm for riding I haven't had in years. My girlfriend is totally stoked that I got a bike she can ride on too.

Welcome to the Forums Mark.
Where in the Bay Area are you located?
I am in the L.A. area, but my old man is in East Bay (Union City) and usually is out at and around Alices on Saturday and Sunday. He usually is in the middle of the roads under the trees on his 1290 SDR, 1190 ADV-R, or 1290 Super Adventure.

Welcome to the forum, I am in NorCal too. Which hyper do you have? I just sold not a long time ago 2013 Hyper SP with full termi and up map and had no surging issues at all.
