welcome to this nightmare!! I am assuming you have ridden the SD 990 before?

If not .... this should be your soul mission before the purchase,

the Orange SD is far from a cookie cutter ride.

Hi - its been a year and a half since I've been on this site = In June of 2012 while riding my 990 Superduke (that I loved) with my friends a doe jumped out in front of me and I hit it or rather she hit me. I am still alive but suffered a great many injuries - I was traveling about 70 mph on a very nice twisty lake road that I've ridden at least 150 times over the years and NEVER had even seen a deer or any wildlife yet I knew they were there.

Long story short I totaled the Superduke, broke 8 ribs (the surgeon said he'd never seen anyone with 8 fractured ribs) fractured my collarbone and a few other assorted injuries none thankfully life threatening. However, while they were doing the routine x rays, mri's, catscans etc they determined that I had serious cervical disc impairment which ultimately resulted in my having a very serious neck surgery. Thankfully I had ample protection on, with a spine protector, full leathers, great boots and gloves and an Arai helmet - other than the fractures and a bit of bruising I was very fortunate - most doctors said I was lucky to either be alive or walking - and yes I am lucky I guess it just wasn't my time -

I/m now pretty well recovered and back in reasonable shape for a 74 year old geezer - so far I haven't even thrown a leg over my 2007 690 SM but its been on the battery tender forever and is covered in the garage waiting for me -

I think I/m back but of course I've got to reason with my wife, three grown kids and God knows who else - but frankly, life is just not the same without riding, is it?

Nice to be back all

Best

Steve

You're 74 and doing 70mph twisties and had a nasty rendezvous with a deer and can't wait to get back on a bike?
You're my fookin' hero!
Glad you're all fixed. Keep riding dude.

Wow. Very glad to hear about your recovery and your outlook about riding. I agree, life is just not the same without it. I have two kids in diapers right now and tried to give up street riding when the first one was born. It was the worst six months of my life!

Out of curiosity, what road were you on? I have ridden highway 20 over through your part of the state many times; always thinkng about deer, never seen one. Glad you made it through.

If you are ever here on the wet side and want to take a spin, there are some fun roads if you don't mind moss in the corners.

Welcome back and glad you've recovered. I'd a break from bikes for a while. I was so miserable without a bike in my life that eventually my wife insisted I get another!

I've always returned to bikes after breaks caused by accidents, pressure from family after fatalities to close friends and financial poverty, not to mention the time issue when you have lots of babies! I'm old enough now to know that they are a vital ingredient in whatever life I'm living so welcome back and enjoy.

A late update - bought a new 690 Duke and having the full race kit put on next week. Took my 690 SM out for a nice ride today and my God it was like heaven. Having not ridden in nearly 2 years (June 20 it'll be 2 years since the incident). Admittedly I was a bit anxious getting back on the bike but oh my after about a half hour I'd gotten a lot of confidence back and it felt wonderful.

When I told my wife and three kids life just wasn't the same without riding they mostly said amen - go for it - so I/m back. Now I/m figuring out how I can break it
my wife that I/m going to get a new 1290 SD probably next season - I'll live through this year with the 690 and plan my attack during this fall and winter.

For the Wet side guy it was Highway 97 in ID we call it the "lake road" as it follows Coeur d Alene lake for about 60 miles down through Harrison ID and on to St Maries ID in some of the best motorcycle riding you'll ever find. Great road not a lot of traffic except on summer weekends etc. But, the law is out so you'll need to
be wary as its gotten abused in recent years by the squids. Though we love to pass them on our singles when they're struggling to see through the blind corners all hunched over. Ironically I've ridden that road for more than 20 years and have seen very few wildlife except in 2012 we saw a massive amount of deer on the road and several very serious injuries and even a few deaths due to deer strikes. Many think its because of the wolf population but then again most Idahoans say that so they can shoot them -

Best to all,

Steve

Great to see you back on a new bike Steve. Enjoy. Looking back at your injuries I see that things weren't so bad - at least you didn't break your dick
