Hi all, I'm Johnny. I just bought me an 06 SD with 3800 miles on the clock last week. Needed an upgrade from my 2004 BMW Rockster. Wow...what a machine!!! Now if I can just figure out how to put a small screen and some luggage on this bad boy I'd be in heaven

Welcome - there are a few people running screens on 05/06 SDs, look in the pics section & contact the owner.

Welcome, where from in OH? How'd you get your hands on an '06, that would have been a grey market bike in the US.

Well the SD's weren't officially brought into the US until 2007. They were sold elsewhere so some people were able to bring them over.

I know where Mentor is. If you ever come down to southern Ohio to ride let me know and I can show you a few good roads, but you might already know them.

Hey just getting on here finally, I've been looking for SDuke for a while now. Going to look at one in Chicago this weekend. (2008). Anyone have ideas of things I should look out for with these bikes used?

Thanks.
Dom

Hello.
Bears stickers is the only thing that comes to mind in the watch out for category. Do you live in the cool part of Ohio and have a long drive to see the bike or the less cool and a short hop to get a peek?
Good luck with the purchase, It's life changing

Check the usual stuff - Oil level, radiator fluid level, general state of the fluids, signs of abuse, etc.

But if the Chicago thing falls apart, I have an '08 that I may just part with. I'm up in the Cleveland area.

Well to cool part is on the far side of CBus. But its within riding distance to go have some fun in the country.

Back a long time ago I had an 02 R1, sold that cuz of insurance and certain death. Since had a supermoto that got stolen when I lived in Charlotte. Haven't had a bike since, about 2.5 years. So I think its about time.

Hoping a SD will be something confortable enough to ride home to visit the parents and ride to work when its nice out. And plenty of fun in between. Never ridden a big twin before but the impression I get is a amped up low rpm torque similar to a super moto. So I think it will be fun.

I'll def be looking for some people to ride with if anyone knows the area, and I'm hoping to plan a trip down to the tail of the dragon someday to finally ride in that area.

Good luck with your search. If memory serves me, the border of Ohio and West Virginia was some playful backroad playground. It is not a hard ride to line yourself up for a trip that takes you through the Dragon on the way to Charlotte, No?
As I recall, you are smack dab next to some nice riding for 10 months out of the year. You will love the twin power pulses if you enjoy the thumping of a moto cycle.

Today went well. Bike was not as advertised but I got a good deal. Now have a 08 black on black SD. Cleaning and changing a few things and it will be a very nice bike. Now it has a owner so will actually ride it.

Will post some pics when I get a chance.

Mostly unmolested. All good bikes inspire touchdown to tarmac at some point sooner or later.
I think you scored and as you show niggles that create a peave you also show us that you know how to treat a lost soul. There will be a set of slip ons being offered in you PM real soon as I am sure there is an owner ready and willing to part with gogo equipment right around the bend. I have some junk Graves that are in need of a Y-pipe and holders that I could donate to the thrill when and if you choose more black bits for Black Beauty.
Enjoy your new bike.

Are you able to leave buttons that you do not know what they are for alone?
Do you cringe at the colour pink?
Can you keep a bike on two wheels most of the time?
Is ,woe is me, not part of your daily vocab
One other thing, do you know where to place comma's,,,,,,,,,?

Check your rear sprocket bolts. The one in the picture looks loose. loose bolts have shown up on plenty of these bikes

the damage you see looks to be like a possible lowside (my bike has very similar scuffs and problem spots). The mirrors and rear lights..... those are both great excuses to upgrade to better! I would personally get some sort of fender eliminator kit, or fashion a bracket for the license plate yourself to give it a more clean look. This does a lot aesthetically.

I spent some time working on the bike yesterday, fixing a few more things like the tail light wiring. Had a few questions for you guys about things I found that Im not sure if it is OEM or if someone was really much deeper into modifying this bike before I got it... Im thinking the 2nd because I'm finding zip ties in odd places that looks like someone just threw them in there for no good reason.

What is the deal with this being wrapped up under the seat?
Image

What is this connector for? IDK if its something to do with a power commander or anything like that? Hard to believe its OEM.

Have you ever heard of a problem where the gas tank won't bolt down right? It almost seemed like it was to long to get the bolt in up at the neck, I had to remove the lower hinge bolts to get it back on all the way... maybe something with cold weather up here....

The first is a charcoal canister that is installed as a emission system to send unspent fuel back for a burn through the air intake box.
There are threads here that will direct it to circular file. Bert?
The second is for a factory alarm and diagnostics
The tank issue is discussed ad infinitum and minus a Motohooligan fix is usually taken care off with brute force and a iron workers bar.
It is fun to watch a new owner travel through the pitfalls that are the SD. Like an indoctrination into a special club. One travels through the triumphs and travails to reach the conclusion that you will need a special club to work on the SD. The charcoal canister is just another indication that your steed was unmolested, hell it may have never seen the front tyre leave tarmac. So please, go ahead and molest away.

1. Charcoal canister: get rid of it. Plenty of discussions on here on how to.
2. Tank: swells because of the Ethanol in the gas. During the winter, drain the tank and remove it to allow it to completely dry out. It will shrink back a decent amount. When you reinstall it, you still may need to use the Motohooligan tank brackets but for certain, use fuel stabilizer on-going. This will prevent the tank from swelling in the future. If the problem persists, try to contact KTM customer service, directly, to see if they can arrange a replacement tank.

Thats a bit of a relief. Glad to know the bike wasn't totally molested, and to know I'm not crazy thinking my tank grew.

Got to take it out for a little 40 min ride last night. Some highway and city riding. Thing has so much torque! I'm pretty sure the last time I rode a bike over 500cc was in 2005, so almost overwhelming for a first ride at night on damp roads.

On another note, my bike defiantly need the front brakes bled, and a 40 min ride was enough to show some new oil leaking from the rear valve cover gasket. Is this a normal issue? I know that gasket is kind of expensive, but doesn't look to hard to change.
