Hi folks, I am joining up from the sunny midlands. At the moment I have a 954 Fireblade which I fear I am getting too old for - it is too fast and my back is too buggered

Hello and welcome.
That price to me seems pretty good as long as it isn't a dog.
Plus its a better Mk1.

Shop about a bit. There are a load of low mileage SDs on Eaby right now and I reckon you could get an '07+ model for that price if you are patient. Having owned an SD since '07 myself and been a bit obsessive about them I think it's well worth looking for one that has had a few of the mods that you will eventually end up doing if you own one. They all accumulate to quite a bit of money, and time, so if you get one that's been looked after and had the changes done then you're ahead from the start.
Look for one with a set of good aftermarket pipes, Akras or similar with the right map installed. (and the originals as well) Also look out for someone who seems to have a good knowledge of the bike and has done the SAS removal and mods to the O2 sensors. If it has a Dynojet PC111 and been mapped to suit all the mods then all the better. Ask about where the mapping was done and ask for the dyno chart. And get all the bits that have been removed. IMO there will be bikes that have been done by someone who cares and there will be botch jobs. You can tell by talking to the owner. Personally I'd still go for a one owner model rather than several, (with dubious and uncheckable history), - there's still a load of these about.
If you can get one with a full set of crash mushrooms and axle sliders that is a good bonus. Other things to cherish are a steering damper, aftermarket levers, flatter handlebars, tail-tidy, etc.
Some of the real bling stuff must would include the Motobox, (airfilter unit replacing the standard restrictive airbox), full exhaust system, (other than slip on pipes), a slipper clutch and alternative lighter wheels.
Oh, and black models are ALWAYS faster and more powerful. Don't believe the hype about the orange ones. Or the old pre '06 models.
Good luck, you won't regret it.

Bic that is a very long list I was going to start with a low miles one owner mark 2 that has not been touched, that way I know it has not been messed with. The 05 I rode was pretty awesome and seemed totally standard - the fuelling was a bit notchy and the steering was a bit quick - things which look to have been fixed on the 07 model.
