1290 Speedo Correction

Growler48

Has anyone figured out how to correct the speedo on the 1290? I checked with Speedohealer and their product won't work because of the CAN bus on this bike. I haven't been able to find another solution. I want to change the sprockets on mine when I get it and need to correct the speed indication.

Yes we did, use the search button.

Our nordic friend got someone to cut new sensor plates for the front and rear wheel with 10% less tooth in them.
I looked in to it and that's the easiest and best solution so far. It doesn't affect the ABS or TC.
What we need to do is have a look if there is one available of the shelve like from aprilia, bmw or so that fits easily and works.
Or get motohooligan or someone with access to a laser cutter to pump some out.

If I get the same bike I'll look in to it again.

Our Nordic friend WAS going to post the detailed dimensions on the new chopper ring so we could get some made but he has not posted any further details for us

Don't forget the traction control works off a comparison of front to rear sensors. If the front is replaced it most likely will send the traction control into retard mode.

Yet another one in the books of being drastically optimistic...... I cant believe that a bike from the factory is allowed to be sold with the speed that far off....

I did the actual vs. the indicated using a GPS and it is almost 16% off!!!! That is just ridiculous!!!!

I called the two companies that I was able to find that make the correction modification (speedo healer and 12oclock labs) and 12oclock labs told me they can not do it and speedo healer is working on something.

I know its been concluded since the speed is based off of the ABS/MTC ring sensor the only way to fix it so far is cutting new disks with more slots, anyone that has tried this does it work? And how close is your speed now?

Thanks

Who cares. Yes I'm sure mine is 10-12% high but does it matter? In urban area I move with the traffic. In rural areas
I go as fast as I'm comfortable and rarely use the speedo for verification.

It's what's comfortable.

Growler48

Growler48

2015-06-17 11:57:00 UTC

Well it matters to me. Its a very lazy piece of design. worst part is ktm probably know about it and haven't got off their ass to fix the problem.
If I had the original CAD files I could have the design corrected in less than 2 hours and the design changes could be seamlessly integrated into their current production lines. WTF its not hard to fix. Pretty slack I recon.
I would prefer to know exactly how fast I'm going and to see the correct numbers on the dash, same as all the other parameters I see on the dash. Should I expect that they too are up to 15% inaccurate
It shouldn't be up to the customer to produce a fix; thats ktm's part but they seem a long way away from their customers sometimes.

Mine is at the dealer right now fixing a gas leak caused by the plastic connection they say.
I read somewhere here that the dealer was able to change the diameter of the front wheel, and that this was wrong from the factory making the speedometer read too fast. Set an inch smaller should make it about right. IS this possible? Reading this thread it would appear they can't change it.

Found some time today to pull both ABS rings off, hope to report back soon.

Had a new axle fitted a few weeks back & found my wheel nut loose today when I removed the rear wheel , yip not torqued to spec, sprocket nut was tight, I have not ridden the bike since the new axle was fitted by the dealer it has only been ridden home & parked.

Would changing the rings affect the odometer, so the Speed would be correct but distance be out?

Changing the ABS rings can lead to all sorts of problems - a few years ago the Honda TT Legends Endurance team swapped the rings for lighter aluminium versions and their ECU refused to play ball - after plenty of head scratching it was found that the ring for one of the wheels had one slot less than the ring for the other wheel so the system could never calibrate itself and spat out an error code and sulked until the problem was identified and fixed.
Does the speedo signal get taken from these then, and not read from the front sprocket like a Japanese bike?

I can report back the ABS ring mods works 100% with no side affects on both Kev2 & my bike today, I will get a 44T set cut this week as I want to see what they read at. The one offs were not cheap but can say finally I have a Speedo that reads closer then the OEM spec Speedo.

With the 43T ABS ring, GPS speed at 100KPH = Speedo reading of 100KPH, the 44T results to follow soon as we need to add compensation for tyre wear.

OEM ring 48T on the left, 43T modded ABS ring right

Good to see a fix for this! I could use set as well...
I decided to check mine againt GPS yesterday, used my android phone and Ulysse speedometer it was
100% accurate in my 370Z. made a quick reference chart and taped it to the handlebar started up Diablo
Super Biker and went for a ride! good app to later check my speed anywhere along my ride.
So for my US model..
Target Speed on left and MPH over needed on the right. I still need to get any with a ?
Trying to get anything between 20 and 30 mph under 4000 rpm was fun erm not really

Has anyone determined whether the inaccuracy is exactly the same for both speedo and odometer, or whether they are wrong by different ratios, or if in fact the odometer is actually inaccurate at all? This is definitely the case on some vehicles, so I was just wondering.

I'd rather have an accurate speedo, of course, but it would be interesting to know whether the speedo is deliberate skewed in software while the odometer isn't, or what.

The other unknown that I don't know the answer for, has the speedo been corrected on the 2015 models if there is any difference between the 14's & 15's the ABS rings will show a different result. I have sent ktmguy a PM as I want to send him a set to try for us to confirm, if he is to busy over the next week or so I will need a local rider in Brisbane to test them for me?

It would be of interest to fit a 60 height front tyre in place of the standard 70 (about a 25mm difference in diameter) and see where the speedo reads.

Edit: Had a quick search and found reducing in height from a 70 to 60 would bring the speedo reading within 1km of the true speed (working on 8% over read at 100kph)
I`d be sticking to the "sharper" 70 height tyre though

My 2014 KTM 1190R likewise reads 10% high. In my quest to find CAN BUS readers, I found the TEXA diagnostic equipment, sold in the US by Precision Tec Diagnostics (Chad Cone <[email protected]>). He provided screen shots of the menus available, one of which shows 'Speed Correction'. see:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/81ha0hutw7hxi2j/TEXA.jpg?dl=0

Not sure if this allows the introduction of a new scaling factor or ??? Unfortunately, the cost of the unit is several thousand dollars. But it implies that the dealer computer should be able to change the scaling factor. Maybe they are just reluctant to modify the setting.

and speeds are within 1km hour so all good Thanks Kev ( cycle computer based on wheel Circumferences so I know its 100% correct ).

This is probably a silly question, but what would happen if you blocked off one or more of the slots on the stock rings? Would it freak the ABS and/or the speedometer computer, or would it just read less slots per revolution as the new plates do?

I got my ABS Rings installed today! Very Happy with the results! Thanks Kevxtx!

Here are a few before/after photos.

70 MPH before the rings were installed. - exactly 10% off! It's a bit hard to read, but the GPS speed is 63 MPH.

70 MPH after the rings were installed (notice the change in RPMs). The speedometer is about 1/2 MPH off. It will click up to the next MPH just before the GPS does so. That's about as good as it gets!

Installing these rings also had an affect on the odometer reading.

Before the installation, the odometer read high by 3.8%, or 103.8 miles at 100 miles on the GPS (lighting was bad, so I had to take 2 pictures). Here are the numbers to do the math.

After the installation, the odometer reads low by about 4.7% (rounded up), or 95.3 miles at 100 miles on the GPS. Here are the numbers to do the math. I don't understand the difference in the odometer reading. I thought it would've gone down by 3.8%.

I realise the speedos are off anywhere from 10=14% - driving down my local freeway when I/m running an indicated 72 in a 60 mph area cars are passing me right and left even the little old ladies in the right lane -

So, why do I care ? I don't - at first I was overworked about it but now I am just living with it - I go the pace of the other cars in the urban areas where the law enforcement live - in the rural areas where I ride most of the time on the twisiie 2 lane raods who cares? I don't care what the speeds are on the bike and as long as I/m enjoying myself who cares?

I used to worry about all those little quirks on every bike I owned - not now - I just ride this bike and enjoy it - best bike I've ever owned bar none

I bought these sensor rings on eBay and they work. Speedo is right on now.

Woohoo! Ordered my speedo rings from Kev on eBay and they made it to the U.S in record time. Between shipping and customs I thought they might take a week or so. Nope! They showed up in California within a matter of days.

Can anyone who has painted the rings comment on what products they used and how they're holding up? Know I should have the rings powder coated, but I'm not setup for DIY coating and the only local shop I trust always has a long backlog of work. Wondering if I can get by with Rust-oleum rattle cans or something; the inaccurate speedo is driving me crazy!

My rings finally made it through customs and showed up. 1 month, almost to the day, to get them through there.
Now i only need to get them painted or powder coated and mounted.

Speedo correction disks fitted. Speedo now spot on. Slightly disappointed in the 10% reduction in mpg. But happy with the extra 10% between services!

They arrived just after the terrorist attacks in Brussels, so every package had increased attention unfortunately. Lot's of delays and such.

I've had mine anodised so paint thickness not an issue.
