2016 Superduck 1290 GT

The fook is going on with the nose? It's like they took a 990 SMT front end and said how can we make this worse?
The 6.5 gallons of fuel capacity is really nice though.

I got invited to be involved in a small consumer rating/review (5 people) of this bike here in LA about 8-9 months ago (photos and discussion only)....was sworn to secrecy but now the cat is out of the bag. Couple of designers came over from Europe for the effort, one from Kiska and the other from KTM.

To be honest, the final product looks much better than the cammo version seen in these teaser photos. The painted versions do look pretty slick but it still has that monster shark mouth on it though. The one thing I suggested they consider revising (well, that and the ridiculous SS swingarm).

If AC's review is accurate, this could be THE do it all road bike.

Lowrance

Of course it doesn't look as good as the SDR. It's a "do it all" bike. Anyone remember the SMT? That bike was the same, one of the best bikes to own as far as usability, but definitely not the best looking. And honestly, there aren't many bikes out there that come close to looking as good as the SDR1290.

This GT is not going to be bought by current SDR owners, but hopefully it gets more people buying KTMs so they can keep developing big horsepower V-twins.

I for one will keep traction control off, and take the wind in the face.

My opinion..
What a fookn joke..!!
Definitely isn't a good direction.. Already have the market
with duel sport top dog..
The injuns are going backwards..
The need to perfect their Superduke..
I hesitate knowing I can buy a v4 of better
quality and less p.i.t.a.fix to make it right..
My opinion..
KTM DID GOOD.. BUT NOT BETTER.!!!
= 1290cc. 163h.p.
Aprilia Tuono 1100cc 175h.p.
Better electronics..
Quick shifter standard..
Switch modes on the fly...

Anyone ride a new 1100 Tuono.???
Let alone.. the new rsv4...??
201h.p.

Out the door cheaper too..
Except the rsv4rf

The biggest kick in the dick for all 1290 SDR owners:

"It also gets a standard quickshifter."

"Oh, and more power and torque too. KTM aren’t saying exactly what power it’s producing yet but we reckon on more than 180bhp."

So I wonder what they did differently to make it work on this bike.

Bermo KTM

Bermo KTM

2015-10-08 17:42:00 UTC

Quickshifter - NBD - they sourced the sensor, etc. from a 3rd party, and integrated into the ECM. Will no doubt show up as a $650 accessory (+$250 stealer re-flash) for the SDR. Probably fuel-cut based ... LOL - will be a "standard" item on the 2016-2017 SDR.

BFD

More power: Bullshit. Moto rag/marketing hype. 150 RWHP. There are only 2 ways to increase power without change in displacement: increase compression and/or let the engine spin faster. Either of these have other considerations/ramifications; I can't see KTM successfully rolling out a variable valve timing/lift system any time soon to keep the broad power band (part of the reason they puffed the displacement to 'busa territory), while making more power.

I wouldn't knock cruise control until you've tried it. I have it on my current bike which I use strictly for weekend blasts and track duty. The feature is amazingly good. Droning down a super slab with cruise before (and especially after) tearing up the twisty bits is magic...really.

Not sure if I'll be able to own another road bike without it.

You forgot the QS.

Where is that pic from??
While searching, I found something that shows that the GT will be even more special than anyone realised:
KTM has unveiled its 1290 Super Duke GT touring sports bike and it’s coming to Australia early next year to fire up the touring sector.
It is powered by the lethal weapon
10301cc V-twin engine with new cylinder heads and new combustion and ignition maps for a more easily controlled bike that suits its touring capabilities.

Now, where DID I put that Traction Control....

One thing I will say about KTM: they typically don't give a flying #^$% about their heritage or their roots. They are a company always seeking to improve their product. If they happen to alienate some of their customers or deviate from their traditional path, so be it. Look at the 1290 Super Duke. This came from a company who only a few years ago strictly built rattling single-cylinder dirt bikes and super-motos. I personally feel like the Super Duke and grand tourer don't belong in the same sentence, but then again there were a lot of people who thought a 1300cc naked bike was ridiculous as well once upon a time. Regardless, at least KTM is doing SOMETHING with their line-up. I'd rather them make questionable decisions than just sit on their product line and be left behind.

I don't like windscreens and I like wind on my body when riding. It does some strain at higher speeds but it also is a good exercise for neck and stomach muscles. The body adjusts for the situations on the long run... Motocycling and masochism have something in common.

I also have begun to like the looks. At first I thought it is horrible, but when I look at them I slowly get the idea. Someone mentioned mantis - well I like their style. Old V-max (don't like the new one) had some too, looks...

We formerly had XJR:s and those were about the most beautiful bikes there could be. At least post 90:ies... Specially the engine is a classic. Sadly they were a bit on a heavy side and inline4 is acoustically dull. I did everything I could on mine (welded a complete collector, had supertrapps for endcans) and still it sounded like - inline4...

I had already lost interest in motorcycles but disease came back when I found SDR1290... It had what I expected Yamaha to have in MT-01 but didn't deliver, SDR1290 is light, seating position is just made for my body (I'm 6"1, 220lbs), it has only the essentials, V2 with plenty of torque down low where I like to travel... I don't ride it like youngsters ride their race replica's, I ride it like it was a tractor... I rode my XJR like it was a tractor and well, people don't change so easily. I just like it when on 5th gear, I give it some GO at 2500-3000 I/min (it's a bit tuned for that too so it does deliver). Can feel the pulses then... And the sound when decelerating (has decat, too), that scares the mooses off the road (that's a fact!)...

OK, 1290 GT might have a market. As I said somewhere, I think a platform-thinking is a good idea. So be there alternatives for people, they already have 3 good engines, 1050, 1190 1290... Or... Should it be 1050, 1190, 1390? There's no substitute for...

The build quality sucks anyhow, they have to concentrate on this.

Well I missed all of the release info on KTM's website and on here on the GT so it's a done or dumb deal and now in my eyes the Duke and Super Duke image, bloodline and ancestry as a NAKED Streetfighter is over, apparently according to KTM that's what "we" Super Duke owners wanted, a fat tanked, half dressed, sport TOURING bike. I just can't wait for the new questions on where can I find larger panniers, why doesn't my hill hold work sometimes, anyone know where I can find a drink holder for my latte cup, what kind of fuel economy are you getting, anyone going to the Goldwing rally, anyone mount highway pegs yet, does anyone make a top case with a backrest. Sorry for all of the ranting but I just don't get where KTM got the idea that this is what Super Duke enthusiasts were asking for??? Oh well life goes on, still a sad day to me with the loss of the Duke's "badass" image.

Seems to be limited info coming out on delivery of this bike. The GT still has not made it on the Canada and U.S. KTM websites. Know of a Guy in Austria who just ordered a GT, but was told delivery would not be until March 2016. Anyone else hear of delivery dates in their part of the world?

Interesting. I have talked to a couple of dealers here in western Canada. One says that KTM Canada has not heard, the other says the GT will be here in spring 2016? I did watch a video from EICMA with the KTM international HR guy saying "the GT will be in all markets by March 2016". But have read some articles saying the GT will be here in spring and some saying in the fall? WTF?

Jeez guys, get a grip... if you don't like it, don't buy it. Simples.
You can ride around in smug mode on Your SDRs, safe in the knowledge that you are riding the true Duke DNA, unlike these other guys on the same bike with a screen on it...
A couple of years ago I looked at getting an SMT as a 2-up bike, rode one and quite liked it save for the fact that it didn't have the full-fat 990 SD engine spec. Chatting to the dealer afterwards (Premier Bikes, Didcot, UK) they said that the 990 SMT wasn't due for an upgrade as it would be superseded by a 1290 variant - this was in the middle of 2013. Personally I don't mind it, but I'm surprised that they haven't called it the SMT to differentiate it from the SDR - maybe it's closer mechanically to the SDR than the SMT was to the 990 SD?

Good point Scamb, I currently have a 990SD, and a Triumph Tiger 800 for more sensible activity with a pillion (she refuses to get on the back of the SD) and after learning about the GT I figured that there was one bike that could fulfill the roles of two that I currently have (and need to keep both taxed, tested and insured all the time). This spring I will be getting a couple of test rides on a GT, both two-up and solo to see how well it does both jobs, and if i like it I'll sell the 990 and the Tiger and go for the GT.
I'm only a relative new kid without too many posts and haven't been here very long (and I'm still learning all about the new terminology such as SAS, Flies, Motohooligan airboxes and the like

I have also considered selling my 990 and F800 for the GT..? I'll see what the reviews are first. I think if I sell the 990 and F800 I will get the GT and a EXC500 .

5 are already on the road. We had the Motoh (that's how they spell it) fair this last weekend. It's been in our local dealers for the last two and a half weeks.

Some are very excited and attracted by it, some concentrate on specific novelties like QS or CC or the suspension, some are happy there's more room, and some don't seem to be moved by it in any way.

Not that anyone asked, but I look at it with the same blank stare with which I gaze upon the 2016 SDR - where the only change is the clutch fluid is no longer mineral.

I got some laughs reading this thread, having owned and travelled 18,000Ks on the SD1290R, and now 700Ks on the GT, well the GT performs just like the R, its a little more stable at high cornering speeds, (i removed all front and rear chicken strips in the first 100K) the GT is very inspiring, it corners like its on rails, the screen, and extended head light give the bike better high speed stability, the electronic suspension is great, I'm finding 1 person and luggage setting in street mode, very similar to how i had the R set up for road riding, there is many plusses to the GT over the R, but one thing and only negative is, I've noticed is the extra weight while pushing the bike around, one big plus is getting over 300K from a tank of gas. cornering lights and cornering ABS also big plusses, other than that, these bikes are very similar. Once its had its first service, and i get a pipe ill be able to give a better idea how well this bike does, loving so far. ....OH PS, in NZ the first shipment (15) of GTs, sold out in a week, the next shipment was due in march next year, and with interest and orders adding up, KTM NZ brought in 10 from the US, one of which i brought, and 4 others were pre sold also. I think KTM got the bike right, and right for the market.

Cheers for the comparo Dave.
The older I get the more the GT makes better sense. I generally do more k's on my Tiger 800XC, not for its off road functionality, although it does get some but just because it's a better bike over longer distances and shitty roads.
The 1290 only really gets used for quick squirts. It has actually been that long since I rode it that the battery went flat. Maybe time to ditch both and just get a GT.

scamb66

The GT is a great bike Scamb, but the unthinkable happened today, while chasing my mates up over a MT (windy hill) as exiting a fast up hill corner that has a sunken bump in it where the suspension loads up then un loads as you get on the gas, well there had been some road works, but the road looked cleanish, well i got hard on the gas and the backend let go, it gripped and i thought id saved it, but was so out of shape i lost it low siding it at around a 100kph, bike slid up the road grinding the shit out of the right hand side, she's pretty damaged, and going to cost a heap to repair, I'm ok got a baddy swollen ankle, (hope its not broken) some burn graze marks up my back, and a bruised hip, lucky, as me and the bike slid up hill and didn't hit any thing solid. Depressed the bikes pretty damaged, oh well fukit, bite the bullet and get the parts ordered.
