990 Super Duke fuel consumption gone mad? :O

Hi guys,

I've got a 2011 model 990 Super duke with full Akra pipes, with around 7000km on the clock. I bought it second hand in May with only 3900kms on it and it's been great fun. I didn't use it for about 3 months as I was traveling for the summer.

Now after coming back, I've noticed the fuel consumption is a little crazy.. I'm pretty sure I used to get around 180km at least on a full tank, before the fuel light went on (and stayed on). Last week, the fuel light went on at 140km and today, it came on/off at around 100km and stayed on after 120km. This cant be normal?

Currently this would mean that the fuel consumption is around 13-15l/100km or 19-22mpg

This can't be normal? That's more than on my old BMW 330ci..

Should be noted that before I used to live in Milton Keynes, where I traveled distances of around 6 miles a few times a day. It was dual carriageways with lots of roundabouts, so mostly full acceleration / fun ride mode on. Now I'm living in Canterbury, where I'm traveling a very short distance (1 mile) many times a day, and there's a lot of traffic.. But mostly I ride economically, apart from maybe fun riding 30% of the time.

Sounds about right, I do a 5km commute to work each day through urban roads. Fuel light goes on at around 130 and my fueling is all sorted with a custom map. Was worse with akro map.

If I where to go on a big ride up the mountains I get to at least 200km before the light comes on.

Just guessing but maybe the bike drinks a lot of fuel when its warming up which is why short trips guzzle the fuel. Also the SD could be quite a thirsty bike when just idling at lights.

I warm my bike up for 30 seconds

Its a good idea to change oil more often if your doing short trips also.

They are not the most economical bike around but they are a heap of fun.

I don't get it either how these small light vehicles drink the same petrol as a family car lol

I don't commute on my bike but I usually get 220 to 230 before the light comes on?
When I fill the tank I squeeze as much as I can in there.
PS how you going Natedog?

I think you might need to check your air filter there could be rodents living in there I'm serious.viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11617&p=133243&hilit=mice+airbox
Also get a tuneecu cable and check what map your running.

Update:

After riding very economically since the last refill, the fuel light is on again after only 120km. :/

I checked the air filter, and it seemed normal to me, see photo:

I don't know what else to do anymore.. should I just bring it to the nearest KTM dealer?

Is it actually high fuel consumption or low fuel light coming on early?
