i don't know how to use these forums / finding old posts etc etc so hope this doesn't get anyone BENT , but being a fairly new newbie to the forum AND the bike here i go !
Posted before : bike had recurring strange behavior to RPM needle - once in a while doesn't register , other times would shoot up and not come back down so shut bike off and re-start and always fix'd things. But lately bike started running funny ( cutting out some sometimes ) and RPM would hover around 3K plus sometimes too ( never did that before ).
So was suggested i check BGC ( it's clean and greased since i got the bike at 8K miles ) ( bike is damn clean in general anyway )... Took bike for ride not cutting out but still houvering rpm at 3K a bit but then comes back down .
took bike home and got under the headlight mask - started JUST taking apart and reconnecting connections ( One at a time ) ( going through and inspecting closely all the wiring )... Everything looks good and CLEAN too. after all done ----------> Turn key on and NOTHING on the dash except the little orange light upper right corner. Ride bike - rides just fine - no more hovering at 3k and all seems ok except for the completely DEAD dash ( No RPM needle - no FI light nothing but the little Orange light upper right )
I know this has been beat around and around in the past but wonder if anyone has a clue ? In the past was thinking maybe the Regulator/Rectifier was going out - maybe it is ???
there's ALOT of wires in that damn headlight bucket just don't know where to start researching/testing and don't want to give up yet and bring to Steal-er as i have a feeling i won't be able to leave there without a 700$ bill which i just don't have the money...... and then they'll probably say "Opps can't find the problem"
cheers / thnx in advance ..

Re dead clocks this from here viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10424&p=240746&hilit=Soft+32+Dat+101#p240746;
Solved and it's another one to add to the checklist - broken red/white wire at 12 pole connector to bottom lhs (sitting on the bike) behind headlamp - from the wiring diagram, this appears to be the power source (excluding backlight) for the speedo unit - manual is wrong/inconsistent re description for this connector and the one above as the bottom one is definitely for the front wiring loom including the speedo unit.
Re the 3k tickover - could be one or more of many things incl. bgc, reg/rec, tps, etc
Re tacho - no idea.
But taking all together, could be battery, battery wiring, earth wiring/connectors and/or reg/rec.
'Fraid the only way is to check all one at a time.

I think your "clue" lies in what you wote above. If I am reading your info correctly your problem got worse after you inspected the wireing under the mask. I would go back to this area and do a tug test on the wires at the connectors to make sure the wires are indeed crimped to the connection pins in the connectors. Look for general wire condition, as in pinched wires like from the steering stops.
Don't know your bikes year but others on this site are having problems with the speedo cluster because of water damage.
Years ago I took my Toyota pick um up in for a timming chain install. I liked the mechanics so I took the time to clean my engine bay. I drove the car to the shop, they started it the next day and put in the bay to work on, installed the the timming chain and the engine would not fire.
I get a call from them asking a few questions. I told them I cleaned the engine with a high pressure washer. They replaced the coil, that thay called the igniter, and it started up.
The moral of the story is clean and moisture is not always good thing ,expecallly for electronic components. Good luck ringing your wires thru.
ps. My 04 KTM Adventure was cutting out and I found the gremlin in the key switch. I pulled the non-serviable assy apart, cleaned the contacts and lubed them with delectric grease and problem solved.
