Hey all, I've been considering a adventurer style helmet to wear on my sd. The mx style with the peak but a normal visor, I like to look at my sd as a fat road supermoto lol! Do you think the peak would cause me any problems if I were to get on a private road for top speed run???

I have an Arai with a peak, (the hybrid motocross helmet with a visor), and it's useless on a fast bike, if it catches the wind the wrong way it rips your head off! Without the peak on it's OK but no different from a better, higher quality Arai road helmet. Why would you want to do it anyway?

I have an Arai XD that I bought when I owned a 625SMC. I found it very uncomfortable to wear on the SD at anything over 50mph. It's noisy and you can't relax your neck for even a second without it lifting or twisting in the wind. The KTM touring windshield only made things worse. There must an adventure helmet that has solved the "Aero" problem, but all of the ones I have tried failed. ( On the plus side the Arai XD does look cool and with all that exercise you will never have to worry about getting a turkey neck )

Lol, could do with losing a little chin haha!! I just like those helmets, and what with ktms pedigree I reckon a peaked helmet can be pulled off without looking silly? Any opinions? I bought the sd cause I like the motard look but ride on the road, the arai I saw in 'bike' this month is gorgeous... So we reckon its a neck breaker... I might buy a cheaper one to see how I get on, spada sting looks quite good.

I have a slightly different view.
The real benefit with this style helmet is the Sun/roost-visor(peak), the extra peripheral vision, and cooling.
I like my XD. I've had it since 2003. The visor(peak), is great if you ride when the sun is low on the horizon. You have to know how to move your head when wearing the visor(peak) at speed, it's become second nature to me,(having a strong neck helps). Removing/installing the visor(peak) isn't hard and takes only a few minutes if it's not wanted. The extra visibility comes in handy in traffic.

Edit, added Peak to avoid confusion realizing that visor also means the clear part we look through.

They are definitely less claustrophobic than road helmets with loads of space in front of your mouth/chin. I had a pair of motocross goggles that I used with mine though so didn't get the benefit of the extra vision!

Cant imaging wearing my off road helmet on the SD. Wouldn't feel right for me.

I have a Tour X that I used to wear on the road on the superduke. Once you hit 120 it gets a bit uncomfortable.

i've only worn an offroad helmet w/ the SD. I've gotten used to it - i like visors - i even wear a baseball cap under the helmet acts as a liner and additional visor ... i reach speeds of 130 or so from time to time - often in excess of 120 , i guess i'm used to it ... and how often am i going to sustain 130 mph on the street anyway .

what i'm concerned about is if i go down scraping my chin off my face without the protection.

cheers

apparently the icon variant isnt too bad with aeros, i havent got one but will be getting one soon.

looks really tough in matt black, especially since my sd is that colour too.

I wear an arai xd-3 as my sole helmet. I sold my Shoei rf-1100. I really like the xd-3 ont he duke and would recoment it to almost anyone. Looking straight forward at 80mph it is not noticable. Head checks require a little more effort, but the sunblocking I think counters any negative. Under 65mps, I thin the xd had better aerodynamics than my RF-1100. I would recoment an Arai xd type unles your a motogp rider

I would stick to a road helmet.

I used to wear a moto cross helmet on a Husky Supermoto and found it a bit uncomfortable over a ton.

God knows what it would be like flat out on your Superduke at 150mph on that private road you mentioned.

Road helmet for me...
I come from dirt bikes originally..
and thought of one of those helmets..
but..too much wind buffeting..I took off
my touring screen too because of it..
Full faced with a good dark shield..
Clear for night riding...I like the extra
protection with the full faced helmet..
No fun sharing helmets with the likes
of bees etc...

The Adventure style helmets are designed to be worn behind a big screen, the Icon Variant has been designed for the street, they look the nuts and would probably be your best bet..

Or a Roof helmet for something completely different..
