Aluminium Tank Help Required

A few of us, over the years have watched our 990 tanks blister and degrade thanks to Ethenol in fuel and KTM's penny pinching. Mine is nearing the point where it will need replacing and I am loath to pay KTM's rip off prices for another Acerbis plastic tank that will end up going the same way.

I have been speaking to a few engineers about getting the tank replicated in Aluminium and got to the point that I need a spare tank so they can scan it for CAD design.

Does anyone have a spare tank from an 07 or later Superduke in Kent / Essex area that we can borrow for a few days?

Luke mate, I thought the RC8 boys had deadded you a while ago!

Are you thinking of getting a copy of the std tank made in metal or a metal tank that can use the standard fixing points?

Did Linga ever make any progress on this? He was talking about doing the same but the price was exorbitant.

Good luck, I'll keep tabs on this. It would be great if batch prices could be acquired.

I have a spare tank located near Tenterden, Kent if needed - not sure what year it is as it cames part of spares package when I purchased the bike. Is there anyway to tell?

Has anyone just found a coating for the stock tank that would prevent the fuel from ruining the plastics?

I have looked into this in the past as I wanted an ali tank to polish and offset my obsession with black.

I even went as far as making up the flat sections of the pattern that would be required to fold into shape and then weld together to create an accurate copy of the standard '07 tank. Although it looks coplicated the angular, facetted design makes replicating it in sheet a simpler task than if it was all compound curves and surfaces. however, for all I know a good modern fabricator would make this with pressure forming or something using larger sheets of ali and not create it with sheet.

I was always expecting to have to pay upwards of £700+ for a custom Ali tank, maybe even a grand.

Anyway, I'd be very interested if there was a group buy to keep costs down.

Keep us posted Luke.

As I discovered when researching this, I contacted ATL:

Their reply is in the "deformed fuel gas tank research thread" - They're articulate with polymers and could create a like for like rotomoulded tank but as I learned (& you can all appreciate) it will be a numbers game/group buy.

It's just another option for you guys to consider.

Another outside the box concept?

Use the existing tank as a cover only and fab the real tank from aluminium sheet.

The real tank could be folded and welded, but not polished, for a cheaper build.

I didn't get anywhere with this as each one would have to be hand made and the guy doing it had a meltdown.
No luck with these things yet
