Fried Angels

Being this is the land of long straight roads it not surprising that the center section of my dual compound Pirelli Angels are fried but with 7000km on the rear I am more than a little surprised that they have died so early. I am pretty fastidious on tyre pressure and looking at the profile it is not overly square which is usual for these parts. These were fine prior to a 200km ride but a quick run up to 250 kmh obviously didnt help them.
Return to Michelins for me I think. $170 for a Pilot Road 2 from Jake Wilson with $50 delivery from the US or $300 from the local bike shop. JW will no longer ship Pirelli and one other brand to Oz, bloody distributers gouging us again.

Bridgestones hold up well here in Kalifornistan. I run BT16 now, which are great so far. But, i've heard very good things about the new S20 from many different sources. They are dual compound, with hard center and soft sides, seems like a good compromise for long straight roads and a few track days.

Never run Bridgestones before but would definitely look at them. Not the quickest guy around and I am allergic to rain so no need for anything too sticky. JW prices on Bridgies are good too.

Way back when I was just thinking about buying a SD I went for a weekender with a group of guys that had fairly frequent fueling
stops because the pace was somewhat fast. The guy on the SD had to retire after a day because his tyre looked like yours perhaps worse.
The guy concerned was huge - big, muscular ... I wonder if it was just a combination of weight and ripping during the fast takeoffs. Some
time later I acquired that bike and have never had a problem with tyres but then I'm a Michelin fan.

That's OK, Pirelli won't let Sportbiketrackgear ship certain Pirellis west of the Mississippi. http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/De ... k?no=15607 I have no idea what's up with that.

My Angels have just done that exact same thing. All wear was nice and even, and then SUDDENLY, that torn looking strip appears down the center. Not all the way around, but just in a couple of 6 inch long places. You think it would be all the way around the tyre. It is like a thin rubber layer has given up, and tore away from the tyre, only in spots.

At any rate, I have spent hours digging through reviews, and have narrowed it to Dunlop Q2's pr Bridgestone S20's. Strongly favoring the S20's at the moment, as there seems to be a lot more positive reviews, on it, for both dry and wet performance, and the odd track day outing.

actually the Bridgestone were not bad. I have had peference over the years for Michelin and Dunlops

I'll consider the S20 next time i have to replace rubber - say Christmas time

has the tyre lost its grip?

my pilot pure doesn't look as bad as that and on a dry straight road i can drop the clutch in 2nd and it will just spin up until the rev limiter... dont even try it in the wet, its so slippery.

i have alot of trouble getting rear tyres to last, maybe i'm to fat and riding it too hard. a bit over 2000km from a power pure doesnt sound right.

The problem with a lot of Pirelli tyres is that they lack sipes across the middle of the tread to let you guage wear. A hundred miles from home you look at the rear and see thread.

I think I will try the q2 next, they seem well priced.
We import our tyres from the US but we cannot import pilot powers now so will go to the q2 until they prohbit them too.
Never tried the road 3 but used to run the road 2 but they would go square before they wore out and were not that great in the wet.
Vtwins are hard on tyres, if I only get 4000 km out of them and I can wear them out without going square Im happy.

As I mentioned before, I'm on my second pair of Pirelli Diablo Rosso II.

The first set was on my Yamaha FZ6 and when sold with about 6000 km's they we're almost like new. They performed much better than the previous Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa III (could they come up with a longer name??) - faster to heat up, better when cold, much better in the wet and wear better. Grip was better most of the time because it was much easier to get them hot.

Now have 'em on the SD and after about 5000+ km's they look quite good, at about 70% - I'm impressed!
The Duke's much tougher on tyres and I ride it harder, like to slide the tyres quite a bit on slick roundabouts and at the twisties. I monitor tyre pressure every few days (34-36 psi on both) and on commuting I'm trying to avoid going over 150 km'h for anything more than a few seconds. I believe I'll have AT LEAST 3000 km's more before they start deteriorate.

Perhaps you guys should give them a go...

Wowsers!

I just had my tyres done as the front was flat this morning. Riding on a flat front tyre is not a whole lot of fun!

how do the S20s feel?

I do like the way that the Angels have been performing. I'll probably get good mileage out of them as I don't heat stress them too much (long highway runs at a good clip). I used to get 8000 or so miles from Michelin PP on my GSXR 1000. The bulk of my miles were commutation miles - stuck in NYC traffic.......

I know different tyres have different tread radius as well. Another friend of mine he's got a speed triple he let me ride ( after he had the front forks revalved - it was plush as hell ) was using other tyres until he tried the Q2's - he said never had a problem gett'n rid of his chicken strips ( who gives a shit anyway in my opinion ) but said when he installed Q2's he wasn't able to get rid of the strips riding the bike as he usually does ....

All this tyre talk mak'n me cravin a ride - GOTA GO !! Sunny out and no work today = time to play .

You could try the sportssmarts or M5's , even 2CT's give way better grip than angels!! I would never put them on my bike , they are shite IMHO
I dont have to many straight roads round here though

My Diablo Rosso Corsa tyres are great so far. Around 4000km of road use now and 200km of decent pace trackday work, they still look great and I expect 2500km before the rear needs replacement. Suspension is set up well so that helps a great deal in tyre wear.

Also, I ride the tyres with lower pressure than recommended on the road (2.3 bar front and back) because I like the feedback better that way on all my bikes and have always had great mileage. Lot of guys have cold tear problems because of higher pressure than necessary so it's all about getting the tyres in their most grippy condition, that's where they work best and last long.

im gonna try out some dunlop sportmax sportsmarts but the australian importer has no stock for a few weeks in a 180/55. my dad runs them on his 950 sm and they've worn pretty well considering of how much abuse it gets.

I'm currently running Q2's..I like em..
I have run two rear tyres and one front tyre about
5000mi...Not too bad..I try to not run too much highway
miles and keep to the twisties as much as possible...
Also did a track day in between
I haven't run any other than the stock Pirelli tyres that
were shit when they got swapped out...
I'm interested in some other tyres...
The Michelin track tyres seem the shit...
Interested in hearing what the new Bridestones
and someone is trying some Avons too...
I'd rather have good grip that hard tyres without the
grip and better mileage..Some of the boys I've run with
are pretty aggressive..
and..
I DO care about getting the chicken strips off...
Says alot when you ride up the the Rock Store or
Newcombs Ranch..Seems people look at your bike..
your gear..then your chicken strips..
THEN they talk..LIke..man you gotta get rid of those chicken strips...
