After I made a post about being disappointed by the new 790...I discovered this post put up 3 days ago:

Here's what I had questions about (copied directly from my email to the person)
----------------------------------------------------

- are you the second owner of the bike/chassis? if so, what's the bike's first owner history?
- what was the issue with the original engine?
- do you still have the original engine?
- what was the mileage on the second engine when you bought it?
- who installed the new engine?
- have you personally done any work on the bike?
- regarding FI light, what code is it blinking? Does it just stay on? Is the bike running OEM fuel map?
- you mention the new engine had "paperwork." Is the service history of the new engine and the current bike in hand?
- has the bike ever been down?
- what's going on with the fork sliders? there are signs of wear
- I can see the Catalyst Reaction stickers on forks. When were they serviced? Other work done on them? Rear shock serviced too? Have paperwork for that, if so?

I used to own an '08 SD for a number of years and am quite familiar with 990's. Your tank panels and battery cover are not stock (missing decals). Brake & clutch levers, footpegs, mirrors, throttle tube, windscreen (touring on there, not shorty) not stock either. The bike's also missing the chain guard/tyre hugger. Do you have the stock parts that these aftermarket bits replaced? (that goes for the exhaust too, though i realise the bike sold w akras as an option). Are the headers Akra headers?

Any general issues you've run into besides the FI light?"
----------------------------------------------------
What kind of questions would you have about it that I didn't already ask?

What do you guys make of the bike/post?

Your thoughts are appreciated

First question should be whether it’s a late registered ‘07 SDR or ‘proper’ full fat ‘08 SDR.

PS - the wear on the fork sliders black nitride coating is to be expected for the stated mileage.

Would be interested if the first engine failure was a dropped valve..........

Afaik, yes, applies to US models, others may chime in though - two external differences come to mind, full fat tacho has 10.5k, not 9.75k, rpm redline and plug coil packs are three, not two, wire.

I would ask if the headers say Akrapovic under the engine. Then you'll know if it's a full fat SDR or a standard SD gussied up.

You can see in the pic of the left side of the bike that they are the akra headers. The loop from the rear cilinder is a lot longer than on the normal sd headers.
Question is: was the replacement engine a full fat sdr engine.
Check the plug coils as no47 said.
Cause they could have changed the loom with the engine.

But I would just be patient and look for a better looking example without a dodgy history.

Thanks all, can always depend on solid advice from this group. A few months ago I missed out on what seemed to be a far sweeter SDR whose owner obviously knew the bike and owned with pride. Descrip and pics said it all...sadly ad disappeared and I assume the bike as well to a happy new owner.

I’ll keep scanning the horizon rather than get stuck w a potential Frankenstein/lemon

Cheers!

Also thanks for the info on the finer points of SDR-dom. I had no idea the differences went so far

Essentially same spec. with slightly more miles as my second SDR for which I paid, I think, slightly over the odds at £6k ($7.9k) but if it has your name on it.......enjoy!

Wow, that is an amazing looking example of an 08 SDR. Sounds like the right kind of person to be buying a used bike from. I was about to say that it hasn't even had enough use for the oem clutch slave to spill its guts yet but even if it had he seems like the type of guy to replace it with another oem unit. Very nice bike going by the pics mate

Apparently it was originally owned by a young fellow in Beverly Hills whose Dad insisted he hand over the pink slip it was such a quick bike...ended up with the guy I bought it from last night who put on 500 miles over 1 yr of ownership. That sound like something your dad would do?

I’ll take a peek....

If the dating scene is like picking up a used bike and learning its confusing past making you feel like you might have walked away but also may have found that one true love, I'm sure as hell glad I married my HS sweetheart! Still gotta get title transferred once AAA office opens up monday.

So itching to ride it...or are those crabs I feel?
