Hello chaps. It's been a while.

Looks like I'm going full circle after quite a few years away.

Not that I've been away from riding. Far from it.
Since trading the 990 in 2010, I've had a string of bikes and a Wife who justifiably has wanted to kill me more than once.

I'll run through what I can remember.
990 smt, v4 touno, dorsoduro 1200 and 750, 3 dr650's, 2 1190 adventures, 2 vstroms, superduke gt, xt660, 690 duke, 250 excf and Lord knows what else.
The 1190's and the gt had electrical problems.

I'm riding a Caponord Rally and I really love the comfort. That's the only thing it has over the Adv. Apart from not breaking down. We do a few trips a year and it's great for all day comfort, so I'm going to keep it. Oh, I also bought a trials bike. It doesn't take up much space, so I'll probably keep it forever.

The problem I now face is that I don't have a bike that gives me the fizz (or an erection) like the KTM's do, so I've decided to buy a bike just for fanging once and awhile.
I'm going old school. No electronics to fail or interfere when you don't want them to. A fair weather bit of fun with sticky tyres.

I thought of the old v twin tuono but age, reliability and repair costs are steering me towards either a 990 or 990r Superduke. I have my eye on an R which has a KTM comfort seat at a good price.

My question to you is.... Which one? Standard or the R? The R looks so good.

Appreciate your thoughts.

Welcome back - your SD or SDR conundrum has been debated before - something you'd definitely wish for on either would be a seat more comfortable than the standard torture device.

One of the most recent threads on the subject is here:

Have fun deciding

As far as I know the seat on my SD is standard and I find no issues at all in riding all day, it's a pretty comfortable bike overall.

Gillberg - please elaborate on the issues you had with your 1190's?
I'm just about to buy an 1190 adv. An 'S' version with electronic suspension.

Hi Rich.

I bought the very first of the 1190 adv's in 2013. The S with electronic everything.
It had constant traction control failures, suspension and dash failures. It also had a fuel tank problem the spewed fuel everywhere.
The bike was so flawed that KTM replaced it with a 2014 model. I rode this one for about 1000km and the traction failed on this one.
I soon traded this one in. 15 models on seem to be ok.
The GT only had a flapper valve motor failure. It was coming up for the warranty to expire. I've just sold it. I'm on my 4th Aprilia and they've all been faultless.

Thanks for that Scotty.
I'm now scratching my head.

Haha that's a funny joke, a KTM 990 with no electrics to fail! Sure they have no traction control etc but the electrical system as basic as it is is bloody terrible for reliability.
