I've heard some of you guys swear by WD40 for maintaining and cleaning your bikes.

Can you tell me exactly what / how you use the stuff for cleaning maintaining purposes. Seems like it would grease things up ? NO ? I've only used it as a lubricant .

thnx

Nearly useless as a lubricunt. Great for cleaning anything that has greasy-dirtie film. I swear by its seat cleaning capability. I am pretty certain that it amounts to kerosene in its makeup. I clean my wheels with it and drive chain. I will not use it for any lubricating tasks.. I wont rely on it for even a squeeky door hinge.
WD and an old toothbrush and I can sit on a cold concrete floor and detail to my hearts content or my knees will not work and I spend as much time getting my parts below the hips to refunction. Try cleaning you seat with both light soapy water and WD as the final wipe down.
WD is best for coating crap for storage id est drywall knives and drill bits

Im a WD40 man, used it for cleaning seat/plastics pretty much everything on the superduke (apart from brakes and discs) its great, lubricates, protects great stuff.

I've alway's used it for paint, plastic's,,the motor, wheels, everything,,,my Guzzi's that I would run through every weather imaginable would literaly "shed" water and grime right off and after such ride's I would towel them down and re-apply WD to the "matt" black finish to bring a "luster" that drew comment's even from my stealer as to how I did it,,,the stuff is great

I use it a lot to clean the whole bike, but especially chains and wheels. It also works good for cleaning bug guts off the front of the bike and my visor. But as a lubricant it sucks.

You guys don't like spray silicone for protection?

I use WD-40 to clean grease mostly. (Not on my SD)

And use Pro Honda Spray to clean my bikes.

Agree with most here. WD40 is best used as a cleaner and general coater for a bit of preservation and protection. Last few years I discovered ACF50 which is in a whole new league of protection and amazing water repellent properties. It's so expensive though I wouldn't use it to clean - just coat at the end of a good clean.

Like Nerd, been using WD40 for over 25 years and the smell of it when you fire up a cold engine as it burns off the warming casings and headers is intoxicating. It's the smell of weekend bike washes, Sunday ride outs and signals the end of a job well done and a bike about to be thrashed.

PS. WD40 sprayed liberally underneath the throttle bodies evaporates up into all the wiring harness on a Superduke so if you have a Motobox fitted and want to ride through winter I recommend this as there are a lot of electrics that would thank you for a bit of WD40 love up under the tank.

I've been using Pledge on all the plastics and WD40 on everything else. Seems to treat my bike well.

ACF-50 comes in at about 50 bucks a quart .........

brought it up on the yamaha forum ( Old enduros ) and they came back with this ---------- > http://www.thegunzone.com/rust.html a test done on other protectants...

the EEZOX is a bit cheaper coming in at 95$ a GALLON - a bit less than half price of ACF-50 decisions decisions - the cost of being informed

Do not use WD-40 on Polycarbonate and clear polystyrene plastic per their website.

Mr sheen is what I use on my entire bike (except seat as its too slippy), its even good for mirrors/glass. Its pretty much carnauba wax in a can for around 4 buks. Im sure lots of others here use it to and think its magic too.

I switched from WD40 to GT85 a few years ago does the same job only better I think, GT85 uses PTFE instead of Silicone so it is a better lubricant and corrosion inhibitor than WD40,its cheaper to and often on a buy one get one free deal in cycle shops
