Just recently bought my 2011 model 990 Super Duke with only 5000km on it. It's been working perfectly fine until today.. I already rode it 2 times today but when I tried to start it a while ago, it would just make a clicking sound and the dashboard resets.
Please look at this video of what happens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1KTLRc ... e=youtu.be
At some point it was also making a weird buzzing noise near the battery when I was pressing the start button, but that has stopped now. It just makes the click and resets the dashboard, but doesn't turn the engine. Battery seems fine, at least headlights are bright and horn works fine.
Any idea what could be the problem? Would need to get this sorted very quickly as I only have this bike to get to work, will have to take a taxi tomorrow..
Cheers,
The Gin Reaper

every time mine has done this it has been because the battery has given up the ghost, Sd's high compression V twin are tough on batteries in my experience and usually they only last on average a couple of years. I would start with getting the battery properly tested - not with a multimeter but with a proper battery tester - my guess is its FUBAR'd. Mines done this three times in the five years i've had it and a mates has just done exactly the sameā¦..

+1 on the battery!
On some occasions it also could be a bad negative on the frame or from the battery. Check these out.

Thanks for the replies. This would actually make sense for a couple of reasons..
1. I recently installed a gps tracker on the bike, that could be eating the battery.. although it goes into sleep mode when left 5min untouched and shouldnt use that much energy.
2. Yesterday I started the engine twice without running the engine for very long, as I had the bike on a paddock stand and wanted to get the rear wheel spinning for easy chain lube application. Perhaps this used so much of the battery that it wasn't able to start for a third time a few hours afterwards.
I'll try to borrow a battery charger from work today and see if I can get it fired up and then perhaps get a new battery.

I bought a used SDR a few weeks back. When i went to pick it up it would not start for me infront of the previous owner. Funny cause it started the weekend before that when i test rode it before buying it.
Turns out the connectors where the battery is located - all the way at the bottom behind the front tyre - where full of dirt and road grime. Cleaning the crap off the connectors had it starting again no problems. Worked for me. Dumb place to locate a battery in my opinion.

Lubing the chain whilst engine spinning the wheel is dangerous, I know someone who lost two fingers whilst doing that kind of thing
