Has anyone got any Bike projects on the go?? I like tinkering cheap projects.

I just finished one, a SV650 Minitwin track bike. Bought for £950 in November 2012. Sold fairings and bits off it to buy more bits cost another £200-£300 to get it like this:-
Image
Pretty much stock, made my own aluminium subframe, fireblade rear end, local fellow painted it, relocated shorai battery to side of engine, race loom, few brackets and stuff, 520 chain conversion, zx636 rear shock and upgraded fork springs. I have some cams to swap over to make it about 70bhp but that can wait.
Image

The next one is this:-
Image
Which will become a Cafe Racer. It was bought as a non runner, an electrical problem, got it going, engine sound great, carb leaked fuel all over my foot. Very simple agricultural bike. That one will be a complete strip down job, powder coated frame, etc and will take 6 months to a year

That's some nice work there buddy.

I don't have a project... but i may well have that Superduke soon that's cheap if it remains cheap.

Hope it works out for you Steve..

Ironically I have'nt really tinkered with the SD other than remove the SAS and plug tune ecu into it to see what its all about. I keep toying with the idea of fitting the Rottweiler filter, removing the flies and putting the RC8 stacks on that Ive had about a year! I think it's great as it is so I guess it doesn't motivate.

Nice SV, them R100S`s actually handle very well, should be fun when its finished..

Me I have the old TLs which has been an ongoing 13 year project, my owned from 2 years old 79 RD400E 427cc which is waiting on its 5th rebuild, my `Mint` 99 R1 which is getting subtle mods at the minute.....
My 93 Fireblade never got finished, sold to a mate in bits, its going this Saturday!
Looking for an `Old School` project now

My lifestyle means these things take a lot longer than they should.............

The SD is very nearly finished though

Nice projects!

My SD started as a project. I had my eye on a 1982 Moto Guzzi ST to cafe out when I found my SD.
Love the sounds Guzzis make.

I have a few projects but this one is closest to being done --- it went from this
Image

to this -
Image

it's a 1973 175 yamaha that i got just to ride in the dirt to get some dirt skills back.
Now it's got a different barrel ( DT instead of CT ) for more torque - Blaster piston clearanced ( Huge ports in piston skirt ) RD400 reed cage - Boyensen reeds - Webco highh compression head - Gutted exhaust pipe turned into a expansion chamber - flat slide carb a couple sizes bigger - transfer ports relieved - exhaust port polished ..... Probably less than 10 hours before it's first kick ...

Painted it KTM orange thinking i'd use the color scheme of a SDR but got carried away with paint...... Handlebars are Metal Mulisha aluminium with Renthal bar mounts . Alloy rims laced at home . Recovered seat - custom tail light -

the other projects are the big and bigger brother to this one ---- DT-250 yamaha and a RT-1 360 yamaha - the DT250 strictly for the dirt and the RT-1 i'm going to shoot for 50 hp out of the 2 stroke engine and put it in a chrome molly frame all stripped down hoping the end product will weigh in about 200 lbs .. Should be fun

cheers

Nice JJJ.
I had a DT250. Good bike back in the day. And that 360 Yama was quite the motor.
I have a suggestion for you. Dirt bikes made huge improvements with suspension and brakes in the 1980's.
The mono shock rear and then the disk brakes are what is used today and are so much more of an update that they don't compare, not even close.
If you really want to hone your dirt skills, find a KTM 300 EXC. My 12 year old KTM 300 EXC is a blast and work just fine for trail riding and is not that far off from the current KTM 300.
Just don't paint it and keep it too shiny...you will not want to ride it the way it is designed to be ridden.
Shop right and you can pick one up for 1K.

I have a 1984 CR125 moto cross bike bought as a project, rpice included brand new set of plastics

a Gas gas 280 TXT (talked about in another thread) needs engine rebuild and new fork seals so might as well @go for it@ while it's apart

My Superduke needs, rear cylinder base gasket, seat unit and tank painted, plus I'd like to powder coat the subframe plus maybe the fork bottoms and engine mounts etc

I also have a lead on a CBR400 that needs a lot of work/time/money/effort but if it comes up it's ment to be

The biggest issue at the moment is being about 1000 miles away from my workshop and tools.

One day........ well not one day, it's gonna take a lot of days to finish ^^^^^^^^^^ that lot !

Love this bike - because of it's single minded purpose. But I'd want supermoto wheels, sticky tyres and road legal status. Then rip up the London suburbs on it!! Good one mate!

How did you make the tank though? It's a great job.

Just a quick update:

On the subject of the SV: today I swapped the cams (injected inlets in the inlets, original inlets in the exhaust side), rejetted the carb and fitted a BMC race airfilter. It started right up, success! Should make an easy 10% power gain. I also recently fitted racetech emulators in the forks. I saw Gordon Wright at Cadwell on Saturday and the little twins were ripping round the track. I'm slow but I should enjoy it I think, the bikes are surprisingly capable.

Here's the BMW as it stands, just needs a paint job (probably enamel black with ivory tank inlays and black pinstripe and some balance pipes, I have the silencers ready to fit.
It's nearly there!! Cant wait to ride it.
