This video has some interesting graphical charts that show how the 4 modes (rain, road, dynamic and dynamic pro) affect throttle sensitivity, ABS, TC and the semi active suspension settings.

Should allow one to adjust to a nice plush setting for freeway cruising to your favorite twisty bits then allow you to adjust on fly to accomodate your mood or road conditions. Very intriguing.

The future looks good!

Does the vid remind anyone of the 'unleash the beast' launch??
Looks ok from the side but why do BMW persist with the odd front lights, totally detracts from the overall looks for me.
The big red R look like a copy of Suzuki's GSX-R.

I like asymmetry, not so much the BMW take but at least they're giving it a go. Nice bike but not too keen on the transverse, flat plane 4 config anymore.

Googled crossplane R1 naked earlier after looking at this thread but Yamaha are dragging their heels. Could Streetfighter a CP R1 I guess.

If it weren't for the dumb plastic tank hooha, I love the cute bug like look of the V4 Tuono & it would be an ideal candidate but then I still I think the 990 SDR is iconic. It pains me so much but I hate the bean counting attitude of KTM.

Shoot Pierer, get a passionate MD who cares more about quality than quantity & KTM will be a tour de force.

Pricing and delivery info on the S1R....

Hi John,
I wanted to get you the latest on the pricing for the S1000R . BMW has JUST formally announced it. Also the first of the bikes will be released from the BMW Warehouse (on the East Coast) the LAST Week of February. So, they will start to arrive about a week into March. Keep in mind that the initial production run will be approximately 2 bikes per dealer, so please be patient! We believe that the first supply will be FULLY LOADED, with all options.

Pricing will be as follows:

Base Model $13,150 +$495 Destination = $13,645 (Race ABS, ASC, Rain and Road modes, LED rear light)... I wouldn't get excited about too many of these being produced unless you custom order one!

Standard Package $13,995+ $495= $14,490 (Ride Modes Pro, Sport Package- Gear Shift Assist, DTC, Cruise Control)

Premium Package $14,950+$495= $15,445 (Ride Modes Pro, Sport Package PLUS Dynamic Package- DDC, Heated Grips, Engine Spoiler)

The price point on a fully loaded S1000R is unbelievable! Until BMW actually populates pricing on the bikes we've ordered, I can't confirm that… but that should be right. (I have to put in my disclaimer, in case I've calculated it incorrectly).

If you want to get in the queue, please get your order in soon, so we can get you one!

Let me know if you have any questions… but that's the latest! Thank you!

Unfortunately I will not be able to test ride one until the end of April but the pricing looks pretty solid.

This is the same basic info I got from my dealer today. He was so excited about the pricing, he called me this morning during the major snowstorm here in the East.
It sounds like he will be getting the loaded versions first too.

For the premium package for the S1000R, what would be the similar cost of the 1290 with the same extras?

I will admit there was a bit of pandering in those vids as there was not much in the negative catagory on any of the three vid reviews but that isn't bias. That's, as you mentioned, is protecting their jobs.

Having said that, you should be able to read between the lines if you pay real close attention.

I think he means once you ride one you won't really care all that much about the appearance.. The rest of the bike does look quite good and once the OEM touring screen is fitted you really don't notice the bug eyes that much.

Another nice thing about the Tuono is AF1....they are stocked to the gils with aftermarket goodies. Warning though, if you buy one you might need a second on your house as you will be spending some dosh on the bike (suspension, pipe, RSV tail section....the list goes on and on). It's like a sickness for those guys...worse than we have it!

Not really to do with the beemer but since we are on the V4 subject.
What I don't get is that the RSV4 is a good looking bike, nothing wrong with it, right?! How an Italian firm can turn it in to an ugly sibling like the tuono I don't get?
I like Aprillias and I probably get a tuono for a while till the 1290 comes down in price if it wasn't that ugly. All it really need is a better designed front and they probably sell heaps a the price they are.
Inclined to get a RSV4 but that will be back to sore neck and back with that riding position.

I know about the 5v this is the same on the 05 R1! Just think 20 valves to check
Lucky only had to shim 2 valves but with no gear driven cams it just makes the job that much worse. STUPID YAMAHA!!

Last time I checked clearances it was on a Mirrlees Blackstone V16 ship's engine. 32 to do, and it takes two men to bar the engine over to set the next ones. Fun job!

I owned a V4 Tuono until i wrecked it, and when i had the valve adjustment done, they almost had to drop the engine out of the frame to do 2 of the cylinders. I was actually going to get an RSV4 because i hated the looks on the Tuono, but i couldn't cope with the ergonomics. Dealer suggested i try the tuono instead and i actually told them, i will try it but i wont buy it, because i hate the looks. After 30 seconds riding it i already knew i wanted to own one. And if it wasn't for the shitty quality, hot starting issues, poor mileage, and more, I would have bought another one after i wrecked the first.

MCN dyno test confirmed that BMW quote rear wheel hp, 159 rwhp. This compares to the Tuono V4R ABS 156 rwhp and the 1290 at 160 rwhp.

Don't sigh Lux! I test rode one yesterday and it is an amazing bike, very planted and confidence inspiring! It is bloody fast too!

Asymmetry can be done well at times but not entirely convinced on BMW's need to do it just for the sake of a branding exercise.

My initial impressions after a couple days….shift-assist or quick-shifter! I know it’s just one of many options with an upgrade, but I can’t say enough about how cool this is. It is addictive! The rev range is phenomenal. I know BMW has a software limiter engaged during the break-in period and that it redlines normally at 12k (RR at 14k), but I’ll be honest, I’m not used to this high-rev inline 4 yet…even when it is limited. Crazy high revs creating an intoxicating howl that reminds me of Formula One. Quick mention of other conveniences - heated grips work great with two temp levels and the cruise control with automobile-like convenience (set, resume, accelerate and decelerate) will be helpful when riding the more boring long stretches here in the USA.
I read the manual through once at this point, but I’m still getting familiar with the on-the-fly settings having purchased the Dynamic Pro level option. I’ll rarely, if ever, disengage the safety settings totally since I know the bike thinks and reacts faster than I ever will. I haven’t been riding in challenging conditions yet, so I’m not sure how to evaluate the ABS, ASC, lean angle sensor or the DDC. I do notice a difference in handling diving into turns in the front. It’s hard to describe, but I feel like I’m more over top of the front wheel while I turn in. I think this may be something I will adjust relative to the soft/normal/hard DDC settings. I will also experiment with the Rain, Normal and Dynamic modes. Only after more bonding and in a controlled track-like environment will I consider riding the Dynamic Pro mode.
Believe me...I wasn't thinking about freeking symmetry when I was blasting down the local back roads. I think the engineers that packaged this bike know something more than I do, even if it would be painted camo and had a horn that squealed like a little girl (although I might like that).

Couldn't wait any longer...got a call from the BMW dealer, white fully loaded just arrived, come take a look. 30 minutes later was out the door at $16.5K. They really do look a lot better in person than they do in the photos. The two things that sold me were the 3 year 36K mile warranty and the DDC. Haven't ridden it yet other than around the parking lot to load it in my truck but just sitting on it and doing the old seat bounce, cycling through the modes and suspension settings, there is a drastic difference between hard, normal and soft. This should workout well during jaunts out to the local twisty bits. Road/Soft on the freeway and Dynamic/Hard for the canyons. Dongle is included to access Dynamic Pro (I'll reserve this mode for the track).

Can't wait to get out and have a play!

Really looking forward to some feedback on this.
I've seen the s1000r sitting adjacent to a 1290 at my local dealer and must say the fit and finish of the Bring My Wallet seems superior to the Keep Throwing Money considering they are both debut models.

Finaly got the S1KR broken in and first service completed. First off, the bike is fast...bloody fast! It's got really good midrange and a stonking top-end. Doesn't sound too bad for an IL4 either (not as good as a twin or a V4 mind, but not bad). Traction control works amazingly well in Dynamic Pro mode (least intrusive mode)....a lot better than I thought it would. Wheelies off the throttle in 1st, 2nd, 3rd (no clutch) and 4th (if there is a little rise in the road) all with TC engaged. Really chuffed with the electronics on this thing. Brakes have too much initial bite and I've noticed a little bit of brake fade ripping down one of my favorite tight and twisty downhill roads. Same reports have been coming out of the S1000RR forums and a pad swap fixes these two issues.

Suspension is not too bad considering it's way too soft for me. Just maxed out the pre-load front and rear and set DDC to hard. I'm going as fast on this as I was on my well set up 990 on tight twisty bits (as fast as I will go on the street anyway and wheelieing out of just about every corner). Not bad considering I haven't got the suspension sprung and damped for my weight yet. Really looking forward to getting this rocket out to the track. The DDC is fantastic. I set it to 'Soft' on freeway to absorb expansion joints and 'Hard' once I reach the twisty bits...can't tell you how nice this feature is.

In the shop at the moment getting stiffer springs mounted for my larger than average ass.

All in all, very happy with the purchase.

Here's a link to a video from some guy on a Panigale R wanting to film the first S1000R he'd seen (I had less than 300 miles on it when he shot this). Not going real fast due to the ever present LEOs on this stretch of Mullholland but if you look closely you can see the front end in the air out of just about every corner...way too much fun.

To be fair, Motorcyclist's sister publication, Sport Rider, picked the SDR 1290 over the BMW in its July 2014 issue. The Ape was third, Ducati 1200S fourth and Kawi Z1000 ABS fifth. They did not include the Triumph or MV in the testing. So, from what I've seen MCN picked the Ape, Motorcyclist picked the Beemer, and Sport Rider picked the SDR. That tells me there isn't much objective difference between the bikes and a lot comes down to personal preference. It also tells me I should try to score a ride on an SDR and a Beemer to see for myself.
