After seeing some of the vids of the 1290 sliding into corners, i can only dream of doing this! but...

is it done by downshifting? as using the rear brake is asking for trouble.

how easy is it using the sup moto mode?

Supermoto mode - standard on 990, extra feature on 1290

With the added advantage that is super moto the ABS doesn't kill the brakes every time the tail gets light, street moded is VERY aggressive about keeping the back down and inline.

....and the 1290 has a HELL of a lot of back torque, pretty sure that if you are hard enough on the brakes the tail will come around a bit.

Had a bit of a play yesturday,

This is my first bike with ABS and TC plus the Sup Moto feature but still its iffy just using the rear brake to lock the back wheel to slide it in!? Still a risk of spitting you off.
With TC off and ABS on Supermoto mode i got the back end to move around a bit whilst breaking hard and downshifting.

Again i know the guy on the 1290 Promotional vids will be a pro rider and i will probs never reach that level lol! but surely he's not just using the rear brake to slide it into the corners like that??

even in this vid? is this just rear brake?

Just interested to know how its done

You should definitely not solid lock the rear. That WILLL make you crash. The idea is to slow the rear wheel only slightly slower than road speed. The key is you need to be hard on the front brakes to get the weight transfer. If you are doing it properly you shouldn't really even need to use the back brake at all.
I raced supermoto for a few years and it was just a case of coming into the corner braking (with the front) as hard as you can, then clutch in, bang it down 2 gears, bang the clutch out. Thats it. The back would come round controlably. The good guys actually modulate the wheel speed with the clutch, not the rear brake. And that is with slipper clutches too.
When I first started all I wanted to do was 'back it in' like the top guys but as much as I tried I couldn't. Then as I got faster it just started happening by itself. I think practicing it on a road would be asking for a crash. Go to the track and pick a corner to practice it on each time round, by the end of the day you should be able to get it nailed!
I've never tried it on my 1290 though and dont really have any desire too.

+1 example here.

You can see the rear braking it and backing it around.

Some reckon backing it in can improve how fast you scrub speed off.

This pic is the braking area/entry to the hairpin at . #5 is on a supersport 600 and won this superstock 1000 race. He's a national level rider and it was a club level race, hence being put in with the 1000s.

I think #79 is first at this point rather than a back marker.

Trust me, no rear brake needed.

Nope managed it today dashing up to 90 for an offramp, banged down two gears, heavy on the brakes, as I let the clutch out the tail started smoothly coming around.

It was sublime.
