Fitting Brembo Monoblocks to SD

Started to fit the Monoblocks today.

Had to fit the calipers to the forks to find out exactly how I need to adjust the brake line hoses/banjos to fit. Looks like I need to keep the hoses the exact same length but change to a straight banjo fitting turned through ninety degrees. I've taken off the whole front brake line assembly and will see about getting a specialist company to make the alteration. Anyone know of somewhere in London who could do this? I really want to go to someone who will do this well, not just an auto brake place.

you can buy the kits to do it your self from deamon tweeks banjos washers all you need to do the job, probs be alot cheaper too.

So now I have three choices,

A) New set of custom hoses, from some one like Hell or Goodridge - race style with two separate hoses from the master cylinder to each caliper - the most expensive choice.

B) Local bike place will fit me a new set of banjos onto my existing braided hoses - but then I can't put back my old calipers in the future - the cheapest choice.

C) Get the straight banjos myself from Goodridge and fit them myself, but I need the crimping kit for putting together braided hoses - not too cheap but then I have it for ever.

I have a pair of monoblocks on my SDR, I got my hoses from earls, they have an online custom line builder.

This was what ordered:

1 x Custom Braided Brake Hose (Stainless End Fittings) (CUSTOM) = £23.11
First End Fitting (SS) Straight Banjo 10mm - 3/8" (501793)
Hose Length 850mm
Second End Fitting (SS) 20 Deg Banjo 10mm - 3/8" (502293)
Hose Colour Black
1 x Custom Braided Brake Hose (Stainless End Fittings) (CUSTOM) = £23.11
First End Fitting (SS) Straight Banjo 10mm - 3/8" (501793)
Hose Length 900mm
Second End Fitting (SS) 20 Deg Banjo 10mm - 3/8" (502293)
Hose Colour Black

Total: £49.52

They fitted up fine and I didn't have to alter any of the banjos to get the alignment right.

i'm not sure about your laws but over here the brake lines must have swaged fittings, screw together fittings aren't allowed on the road, and they won't pass basic scrutineering at a track day either.
i've just had a full set made in stainless with stainless black fittings and orange hose, had to supply my original lines as they had no pattern

Grendel picked up a set of calipers from e-bay. unfortunately he thinks they were miss stated. They said they came from the 848, but they do not look like the picture. The brake pads look similar, but the BREMBO logo is much smaller. He thinks they came from a monster. Any way to confirm this?

Hi Grendel,

If the calipers are genuine Brembo monoblocks then they will be machined as one component. There is no split line joined together with two large allen bolts as on the other Brembo calipers - if they have a join then they are not Monoblocks and might be lower spec models from a Monster. The standard Superduke radial calipers are made from two pieces and are really great brakes, nothing wrong with them - but the monoblocks will theoretically work better because there is less flex in them when being operated.

Hope you did not pay too much for them if they are not Monoblocks.

Thanks for the link Al3x!

All credit to Earls......really recommend them for custom brake lines, maybe not as well known as Hell or Goodridge but far better personal service. I rang them Tuesday morning, ordered all the parts you mentioned, as well as some bits to clamp dual hoses together, and they arrived this morning, (two day later!). The guy was really helpful and knew his stuff with answers to all my questions. They look fantastic quality and nice with the black hosing cover. Think I will get the rear made up by them as well they look so good. Also I like companies based at Silverstone - I used to ride Ducati and always used Baines racing who were there as well. I think that the close links with racing makes these companies really stand out.

Haven't even had time to go out for a test ride yet.

Got twin babies due any day and I'm spending all my time at the house with Amy in case she goes into labour.

I'll post up what I think of the new brakes when I get a chance. They look good though!!

I just bought a pair of Monoblocks for my SD. The Monoblocks came off of a SMR. The question is, should I see if the seller will also send me the brake lines also? I then wouldn't have to get different fittings to match up to the new calipers. The SMR lines should run and fit perfectly on my SD right??

And if not, anybody know of a place in the U.S that can help me out with lines and fittings?

The lines for the SMR cost $213, while the SD is $109, why do the stock SMR lines go for twice as much?

Anybody, anybody, will SMR stock OEM brake lines work on a SD with Monoblocks? I'm thinking the SMR lines might be a bit long, while also I have lsl flat drag bars on my SD.

Just saw this post....you did the right thing. SMR lines would have been too long.

For anyone else wanting some lines HEL USA have a great price on quality lines...any color combo you want.

I'm not sure if they'll fit an 05 SD or not, sorry. I don't think the M4's do? You can get these calipers all over the net. The average price for them is around 1k usd. The new lines will run you around $120 usd. Different line brands were mentioned above.

So I installed and bleed today. This caught me by sunrise... If you have a banjo bolt at the caliper, you'll end up with two nipples. I didn't know which one to bleed from, so I bleed all 4 of the fookers. What did you guys do here? I ended up pumping brake fluid all over my wheel because at first I didn't install the SD OEM nipple to the banjo bolt. Hopefully I got it all off, I didn't have any cleaner with me. I was also surprised how much work it took at the MC to get that thing flowing, and to get pressure. But now its a blizzard outside.

If fitted, make sire your coolant overflow cap is on tight, or you'll have coolant all over the right side of your bike.
