Five dollar, twenty minute FMF Apex modification

Thanks to some good advice from the forum, and some financial luck I was able to update my Superduke with an aftermarket exhaust, and the one I picked was the FMF Apex, mainly because it looked right... sound bites on the internet don't help you make a good choice, and there certainly isn't any other SuperDukes around to hear.... But after installation, and a reflash (thanks TuneECU!) I got to ride it last Saturday. While the performance is great, and the quality of the sound is fantastic... the quantity (or volume) of sound is just too much. I've read several threads on this forum, and a few others (ADV has some too) about modification of the quiet inserts to get lower sound levels, along with better performance from the slight increase of back pressure.

So, on to the mod. A few folks have done perforated tubes or plates installed on the small end of the included (or separately purchased) 'dB Killers' from FMF. They look like this when they come from FMF:

I found a commonly available component here in the US that is a strainer meant to be inserted into a drain to catch hair and stuff like such:

The picture is not good, but it is the stainless steel 1.5 inch model... Ace hardware sells it for $2.49, but I'm sure Lowes is cheaper... don't know what the equivalent is in the UK or Europe.

So, pushing it on to the end of the dB Killer gets you this:

I added a couple of rivets, then inserted in the muffler:

In the end, I tried it in reverse like the FMF instructions for the quieter direction. I had the modifications of the two mufflers in about 20minutes and started it up. It is obviously quieter, but it will be Sunday before I'll get a good ride on it. More to come:

Nice job. Hopefully they hold up better than the inserts I had in my Leo's

Wound up having about an hour free tonight for a ride evaluation of the modified quiet inserts.

Gotta say, I really like where it's at. It seems to be a slight bit deeper in tone, and about 6% less loud... maybe more. I think it's great.

I'm running the 05/06 Akro/Moto map, and it feels smoother and stronger in the 3800 to 5k rpm range, with no loss of rush above 6k.

Now, above 6k with wide open throttle it's still bordering on obnoxious... but how often am I doing that outside of track days? Ok, a lot. But it should be loud then!

I don't mind the sound out of any exhaust as long as they work the way the are supposed to. Buy we did have an issue on my dads Buell 1125 CR as that thing was a cop magnet. So we used these . Worked pretty damn good.

Never seen the "Quiet Riot" before... but it looks interesting... almost adapting fluid flow management like a fork or damper.

Well, looks like I need to go to Ace.
Thanks Bus!

I'm a bit worried about the power losses. Have seen some big losses with less restrictive mods.

We had it mounted before the muffler in the solid pipe. It needs to be able to use pressure to open the plunger. Mounted in the muffler won't work. The sound was nice at idle and picked some mid range up also. Didn't seem to affect the upper end much if any.

i had actually been lookin for it, but some one on here a few months back had shown how to weld a washer on a threaded bolt to help reduce exhaust noise..........don't remember if it was for the fmf's.......anybody familiar with the thread?
