Ethanol in US gas pumps causes excessive expansion and contraction of the plastic gas tanks mounted on Ducatis. This may lead to cracking or leaking in extreme cases, but for most Duc owners it has meant bubbling paint only. When drained of gas, the tanks will generally return to their original size. It has been a well documented problem since Duc began shipping the tanks to the US. For the most part Ducati has been very good about replacing the tanks under warranty. The maker of the Duc tank is the same as the SD tank...Ascus or Ascari, or something like that. So far it has not been much of an issue in Europe due to the availability of regular gas. It has not yet been an issue for my SD. Nasty stuff that ethanol...bad for CO2 emission also. Should be banned.

I know a couple duc owners who've had issues with their tanks due to (presumably) ethanol content. Ducati replaced them. But no reason to think that Superdukes, maybe others are just as vulnerable. I think it is Acerbis that is the OEM for gas tanks duc and ktm.

There is another thread on this subject over at BARF. No one is really happy about it. I am thinking of running sunoco 100 octane racing fuel, but not sure if it has ethanol in it as well. The Union 76 station carries it at the bottom of 9 in Saratoga.

My 08 SD tank is at KTM right now. They are supposed to let me know soon whether or not they will warranty it. It developed a hole right being the fuel pump and soaked me with gas. My gages are there with it (for the second time). Second set of gages lasted about 8 months before they started leaking.
