Oberon clutch slave cylinder problem

Anyone fitted one of these who might be able to help me out?

I finally got round to fitting my Oberon clutch slave cylinder and can't seem to get it to work. Everything swapped over very easily after I cleaned up all the old chain oil from the mounting brackets but after flushing through the system with new fluid and bleeding the clutch lever is solid - like a brake lever. I took it all apart again and it seems to me that the slave cylinder is working OK. If I push in the cylinder the level of the fluid rises in the reservoir OK - then when I reattach the cylinder to the engine the lever can be pumped a few times, (not working the clutch though) and the fluid drops again and then it locks solid. It is as though the travel of the slave cylinder is insufficient to push the rod into the clutch.

When I refitted the original KTM slave cylinder it works just fine - exactly as it should. I'm mystified. They both look pretty much the same dimensions and everything but one works and the other doesn't.

A few questions to those who have fitted one themselves.......

What did you get with the Oberon kit? All I received was the slave cylinder, two bolts to hold it onto the engine and two new copper washers for the banjo. No instructions or anything else.

I presumed that you are not meant to fit the KTM 'O' ring that is on the back of the slave cylinder as there is no groove on the Oberon one for it to fit in?

I didn't take out the clutch rod from the engine - left it in place. It has a little pin that sits in a hole across it's end - this fits into a corresponding slot in the black, plastic bracket that sits under the slave cylinder. Is there something I have to do to this different form the OE set up? I feel that if this rod was longer then the Oberon clutch would work.

Thanks for any advice.

The only thing diffrent is mine doesnt have the pin your speaking of through the clutch rod! there is a hole for the pin but theres never been a pin in it!

The Oberon unit is just a direct replacement so doesnt need any special set-up or anything

I've fitted mine just last week .
Mine came with an instruction sheet.
Somebody over here also had problems with the Oberon unit because the metal ball had fallen out the bit that pushes against the clutch rod.

Hope this helps bic!

Bert_be.

You are a fooking STAR !!!!!!!!!!!!

I just followed your thread and link then rushed to go look at the packaging in which my "not-working" Oberon clutch is now lying unloved - reassembled with the little plastic cover over the piston to keep it clean. And there, sitting in the grease at the bottom of the plastic cover is a ball bearing!

YES! YES! YES! This is why it doesn't work. And this is also why I worked out that the push rod is too short.

Now I will refit it tomorrow and everything will be OK.

THANKYOU. I love this forum - it always gives you the answers.

Oberon should make this little feature common information on their website because nowhere have I read anything about this ball bearing in any of the literature I've seen. And this includes their official on-line PDF for the fitting of their slave cylinder.

All fitted and working correct!

Anyone have any problems with one of these let me know and I will sort you out - there's very little that I haven't ended up doing now on this "simple" fit. Just make sure you fit the small steel ball before you go through what I did!!

I had EXACTLY the same problem. Can't believe Oberon don't reference it in instructions

Not been here for a while, but am thinking about getting an Oberon slave cylinder for my RC8. Can you tell me what your feedback on it is now you've had it on for a couple of weeks? Any massive difference? Smoother, easier, anything??

Cheers....

Have done a few hundred miles only since fitting the Oberon so can't say anything about it long term. But..... I would say that the action is slightly easier than the standard Magura item. Should think so given it's price and build quality. But it's minimal and, (like I read on the other thread about this mod.), you shouldn't see it as an upgrade/improvement, rather as insurance against the Magura one's seals failing and leaving you stranded one day.

But they look nicer too
