Rear Brake Upgrade....

As some of you will know I have been working on my bike recently upgrading the single piston rear caliper to a dual piston setup...I found the factory rear brake to be next to bloody useless...it was a severe let down after the front brakes which are absolutely awesome!

A big shout out to KTM-worship for doing this upgrade originally and also for his help and advice with doing my bike...also a big thanks to Weeksy for sending the caliper from the UK to me in Australia.

KTM-Worships caliper and mount came off an adventure and apparently his mount was a bolt on fit....mine was off a 2007 Super Enduro and required a little bit more work

Anyway on with the procedure...

I got started by removing the cap of the rear resevoir and draining all the old fluid out of it, undoing the brakes lines from the caliper and then removing the rear wheel so i could remove the caliper from the swingarm

As you can see they do look very similar side on but...

When comparing the caliper bracket you can see that it is quite a bit thinner than the factory one.

A quick trip to the local CNC machinist had a spacer fabricated for the princely sum of 2 slabs of beer

Back home and the new caliper and mount fitted like a dream...

Next step was to connect the lines to the new caliper, re fill the resevoir with fluid and start bleeding the brakes

The moment of truth...

I took the bike out for a spin and the damn thing was bloody hopeless , I knew it had to be air in the lines so after a good 15 mins of trying to bleed the system normally, my mate and i reverse bled the system and watched a huge air bubble pop up in the resevoir.... BINGO

I went for another ride this morning and it is ten fold better, it makes a massive difference to my confidence in traffic...although when hard on the front and rear picks it is easier to lock the rear now

So there you have it, brake upgrade done and dusted. If you have any questions post them here and I'll try to help the best I can.

990 SMT caliper. Still have some air in there, and it's still as good as the old single piston. Will jack the front end up and give another bleed.

I'd often wondered how to make the rear brake
a bit better...Nice one...

Got any part numbers.????

I never had any issues with the rear brake.....locked up at will. Now the Tuono rear brake on the other hand what a useless POS that was.

Update: After a good bleed I have to say that it's just more-better. Pleased, worth it for my needs at a 100$.

Nice one Nomads.

Agree that the OE Superduke rear brake is pretty non-finctional. Many people on here will say that they don't need a rear brake and that it is redundant but I actually use mine - going into corners to help stabilize, often just to addd an additional braking force in necessary situations and then also to help control the bike at low speeds. The standard brake is really bad. I saw this early thread many years ago and often have put this on the list of things to do.
