Single exhaust superduke??

icarve

2009-05-30 21:30:00 UTC

I'm looking for a better sound some weight loss and hopefully a little more HP from my 06 SD.
In a conversation with a custom exhaust builder he casually said that the best setup would be a single cannister exhaust. This got me thinking, and since I live in New Zealand where everything costs 3 times as much as the rest of the world, I thought that maybe there would be a savings here too. So I have got myself a new, single Two Brothers Racing M2 carbon fibre can (a slip on for a Suzi gsxr 1000) figure this can should be designed to cope with as much horesepower as any bike out there.
I am having a custom stainless connector pipe fabricated, and will have the single muffler exiting on the right hand side. I plan to do before and after dyno runs to make sure it works and also hope to see if I can get the dealer put in the Akro mapping for me.
Would like to find out if anyone has done or heard anything on this kind of setup?

Excellent Will - keep us updated. I like quiet and have a brand new Fireblade 954 can that I'd love to use though it's prolly a bit long

Willh

Willh

I don`t know how quiet it'll be, the video farther up sounds great to my ears.

My stock muffler weighs 24lbs, Leos 11-12lbs, this setup should be around 6-7lbs. Less is more. bikes going on a diet as funds allow.

Recent monetary setback means that I might take a crack at it my self, I have a custom pipe builder that lives across the way that I would prefer to use but have to pay my speedtax first.

Don't hold your breath waiting for an update, they'll come just don't know when.

A lot of 990 Adventure riders have 2 into 1 to make room for a tool tube or aux fuel tank. I purchased my set up from HT Racing and they supply the y pipe and a FMF slip on for a Yamaha R6. It usually results in improved mid range power with no improvement to top end. I had a 04 Tuono with 2 into 2 exhaust and a factory 2 into 1 set up with a Akro slip on. When I sold the bike I parted out the 2 into 2 set up and reinstalled the factory with 2 into 1 and was surprised at the improved mid range power.

Tickets paid and will get back on this soon.
Looks like I'm going to mount it low. Easiest and best for weight placement, not too concerned with ground clearance as this thing never sees a track.
More mid range power would be nice

What's the general improvement in having one over two?
Just weight? Or better power as well?

ok... so on V twins... a 2-1 pipe will generaly increase low end tourqe... off the line power, out of corners, etc... also weight reduction in my case.

I have the CBR1000 muffler being modified to have an internal race baffle... the shop says that there dyno showed 8hp (With the race baffle) more than a yoshi pipe on a CBR1000.... 8hp is a lot on a bike

The thing that i always thought about the duke is why did they design the 2-1-2...

the extractor effect of the collector (joint of two pipes) is optimal ....but

straight open pipes are great for WOT... so.... my other idear is for two seperate pipes that never join.... $$$ and time are the problem

kowekiller

kowekiller

2011-11-24 03:46:00 UTC

Looks killer. Same pipe I had on my CBR 1000rr. You shouldnt have any problems with that single setup being that Ktm stuffed both cylinders into 1 pipe before the twin mufflers. Might as well just run the single pipe(but where does the lic plate go)?

Lowrance

Lowrance

Might as well be straight tubing right out the back. Wayyyyy too loud for a street application IMHO.

is it my imagination or does that look like a tiny little inlet to the muffler? on a stock SD, the pipes leading into each muffler look a lot bigger diameter than the one you have going into a single silencer. what the point in restricting it like that???

1Celsius, sun is low, visor fog, trees add strobe effect, sand, salt, cold dead tyres so haven't been able to get a good feel for changes. Feels good in the bottom. Feels lean in the mid range but that's probably more to do with the temperature... top-end, wasn't going to push my luck.

The sound? Much nicer than my Leos with the baffles, almost quieter at idle, deeper, throatier and just as loud farther up.

The truth about power will have to wait until the road conditions and weather are better. She should be wearing some new shoes by then too.
