Has anyone had an issue with a crash at the track with their 1290 R that resulted in a frame crack? Trying to decide if these are needed or not, since I love the steering radius at slow speed.

I may live in a shoe box, but I've never heard of such a thing.

It may be useful for a bike that is exclusively for racing, but I can see me trying to make a u-turn in the 7-11 parking lot and having to make 43 back n forths since the steering range is shit.

Your bike, your call though.

Another phrase for what orangecrush is describing is "lockstops" - possibly of more use in full-on racing. Whilst their benefit in preventing a fork leg : frame interface situation in a crash may be questionable, their likelihood in causing low speed "oh shit I've run out of steering lock and I'm going to drop it" type crashes is a given. Personally, I wouldn't bother with them OC, but it's your bike mate....

If you want to limit your steering lock you can just screw in the bolt adjusters couldn't you? Or is the point of those kit parts to create a 'soft' stop that cushions the forks in a crash? Seems to me it's a waste of time. I've crashed my SD at tracks many times and never even come close to bending a frame of forks as they are built like tanks. You can bend the footrest hanger brackets - especially if you run rearmost with solid pegs as I do.
