You and me both, its a bloody long way to go. Rather be on track as much as possible, so will do the evening session as well.

I've got some racier pads in now as well so should be able to brake later, going to get the suspension set up properly this year too. God I can't wait to get there now

Colonel_Klinck

Colonel_Klinck

2013-01-22 09:36:00 UTC

Getting the suspension setup right is money well spent! Park is a good corner to practice later braking (as long as it's dry) good markers and huge run off should you leave it too late or get target fixated like I did last Crashfest. You be amazed just how late you can leave it. Great place to pass people.

Hi Brokenleggedbiker
My challenge is for a 1:50 (or less) lap of Cadwell, best yet is a 1:54 with a theoretical best lap of 1:48 if you stitch all my best splits together!!!
Though this is on my ZX6, maybe I will be faster on the Superduke as I'm 6 foot 6 and 17 stone so the extra ummph would really be helpful.

blb

blb

2013-01-22 13:05:00 UTC

My GPS lap timer was playing up last time there but on the rc8 laptimer recorded 1.56, I think you'll find a SD and a zx6 lap around the same times.

I put myself as a good inters rider but feel if I can get to 1.50 I would feel comfortable in fast. Thats this years goal!

Edmeades moved onto the bottom step on lap two, immediately coming under pressure from Fast Bikes Magazine journalist Alistar Fagan. The two swapped positions with mirror moves at Park Corner on successive laps, until a slight error by Fagan on lap 8 allowed both Edmeades and Smith through. Wood paid testament to the strength of his Pirelli Dragon Supercorsa Pro SC2 tyres on lap 7 as he moved 3 seconds clear of Inmoto Corse's Kelvin Reilly, posting a new lap record of 1:35.464s.

What lap timing software are people using, I use my phone and a programme called Trackmaster which is quite good only £7(ish) and there is a free programme called RaceChrono. It would be interesting to see peoples splits if they are set the same so people can see where they are better/worse etc.

Jermo

Jermo

2013-01-23 11:49:00 UTC

I think that would be a great subject for a new thread, I'm interested in that as well. Current mobile phones (I have android) should be good enough for most people but I also don't know which app to get.

Colonel_Klinck

Colonel_Klinck

2013-01-23 11:54:00 UTC

I use Harry's lap timer pro. Needs a external GPS for proper accuracy though as the built in one on the iphone is dog shite. When it works its really good. Sometimes it just fails to register the laps though. Hopefully he will iron out bugs in updates.

Viking

Viking

2013-01-23 12:07:00 UTC

The timers are good for a ref and improving but they're usually a bit faster than real life.

I've ran Race chrono, Trackmaster, both with external gps and now a Starlane gps timer and they all read faster than the official transponder. The starlane is closest at about 0.2-0.5 sec but the remote gps phone ones could be 1-2sec a lap out as sometimes it will glitch and miss a bit of the track out so when you look at it the line goes right across the grass on the apex.

They are good though and the best way to use them would be to try and string consistent laps with them and remove the rogue ones. Like for example if your doing 1.50-1.51's and you get a single 1.47, then disregard it. Realistically unless you do something dramatically different your not going to jump 3 sec a lap. Only work with the times that are consistant and take them with a pinch of salt to be maybe a second out.

It interesting that 1 sec a lap real time is alot but over a lap its not much. It's 2ft later on the brakes, 1ft closer to apex, 0.5 sec faster on the throttle. Small things but add up over a lap. Following guys who are a little faster will show that. You'll be like "theyre not pulling much, only a few feet every corner", but then you get 3/4 round the lap and they're 20ft ahead and thats your second.

hjp1968

hjp1968

2013-01-23 12:09:00 UTC

You can use an external GPS Bluetoothed to your phone, if you get a 5Hz (5 updates a second) one the accuracy improves a lot, 10hz (10 updates a second) ones can actually give too much info and swamp the phone buggering up the accuracy.

I'd heard that the 1199 was too noisy for UK track days with the standard pipe. I was at a trackday last year and a chap was running round trying to tape things to his 1199 Tri-Colour (£23,000 worth) exhaust so it would pass. His wife told me that he had bought it especially for trackdays so he was really gutted!

I disagree...ride the bike however you feel comfortable doing it. The SD is a different bike and your BP will adapt to what ever makes you comfortable. Us old....hhmhhm, older guys start changing things up on a whim and it could all go pear shaped rather quickly.

Looks like you are having fun in your photos....that's all that matters. No checkered flag, prize money or most important, trophy with attached trophy girl during trackdays.

Have fun.

Viking

Viking

If you can get further off the bike though you get around those corners faster with less lean angle. You clearly don't mind leaning the bike over but there is a limit on how far it will lean before you run out of rubber. Saying that I'm starting to feel aches and pains at only 42

You cant tell how quick someone is from a photo. Peter Baker looks like he's riding to the shops but is one of the quickest rider in uk club racing and does 1.30'2 at cadwell.

You'll struggle to run off the edge of the tyre on a superduke imo. I think running off the tyre is internet waffle thats grown arms and legs.

The only problem with riding with high angles of lean is you cant ask the tyre to accelerate when its on its edge so you'll be far later to get on the gas.

Hey guys. Another great two day session organised by the good people at SBR Trackdays last Friday and Saturday at Sepang. Weather held up and it was bloody hot.

Sorry, not many pics to share but you'll get the gist of it. I'm on the SDR with the disco leathers - of course...

Set my PB and had everything working well for me except the quickshifter - I still cant get the hang of keeping it pinned. Got into a few tangles and missed shifts (especially down the main straight and through turns 9 and 13). Scarey sh*t. I'll get there with persistence....... Next session will be in September - could be my last on this bike before thr 1290 rocks up.... wishful thinking maybe..

About a millions dollars worth of Panigale kitty-litter damage and self-destructs were the order of the day on the Friday. Hot heads, cold tyres, warm-up lap offs and piss-poor spannering. Usual stuff. There will be a few bank managers asking questions today.

Cheers mate, all due to using the Superduke against them... Now I'm learning to ride all over again. They really are better on track. 2 seconds a lap faster and I'm still riding like a Muppet.

Hi Aphex,

That was "level I" and it really beat my expectations. I think that it helps a lot, at least if you already have a basic understanding of your skills etc. In my case I had already done 3 trackdays , so I had some understanding of my shortcomings and what I needed to improve and their guidance was spot on.

I've never low-sided to really know what it feels like just before, but the bike felt super smooth during all this. I don't think it was anywhere near the bike's grip limits (Supercorsas)

Bonus point: I was scratching the knee sliders all session long after the first 2 hours or so. A first for me, never done that before.

From the KTM SuperDuke day at Silverstone:

A fantastic day with lots of sunshine.

Jeremy McWilliams was in attendance showing just how fast these bikes can go & helping folks set up their suspension. Mine was a few mm's out on sag otherwise spot on.

Silverstone at it's finest... Good to meet other SuperDukers too...

Baron von Grumble in attendance and he's damn quick too.

I've copied this lot from a old (2009) thread.
If I remember correctly I'd jumped off a month earlier at about 135 MPH and turned up for this one with wonky sub frame and pipes.
After the first morning the down pipe from the rear cylinder split and I had to carry out a makeshift repair.

Image

Early morning and the sky is blue:

I think this at Dry Sack, the hairpin at the end of the back straight:

Lots of lean angle in the next 3. If you look closely at the down pipes for the rear cylinder, you can see my cunning repair with 2 Red Bull cans and 4 jubilee clips!
