Trackmaster GPS lap timer

Been looking into lap timers and decided to go for this.

Really impressed with it. It works on your mobile and has a load of info. I bought a little 10hz GPS receiver from eBay for £50 that i'll mount on the bike. 10hz should be super accurate. My phone only runs 1hz gps so wasn't very accurate when i tried it at Knockhill with an older app.

The app looks impressive, works on any android phone. You can pick your splits for the track on google earth, then the app start timing as you pass the 1st point.
It shows..........
lap times,
best lap,
split times,
best possible lap taken from fastest split times,
top speeds
It even has a function where it will speak your lap time to you every time you start a new lap!!

It has a section for set up already set out for you to input damping settings, sag, , tyre pressures etc etc and will add them to the recored session. Really impressed with this. It will be real interesting at the end of the year when i can go back and see every lap of every track and compare settings. I've already had a look at a guy on a S1000RR at knockhill. You can go in and view corner speeds on the graph from any point on the track.
Here's his data here. Mid 57's are my target time this season and this dude is doing 58's so even though it's a different bike it'll be interesting to see the differnces in corner speeds, braking points etc.

With the GPS receiver being so small it should be dead easy to mount and hide on the bike. Just start the app before you go out and put the phone in your inside pocket

See how you go with that 10Hz, it may work in Europe well, but in Oz 10hz is only good for Drag strips or such as the DGPS works much better on 5hz.
5hz gives you very good reliability as that drops with the 10hz.

This is an excerpt from the very first receiver I Googled...

Note: The datasheet for this unit states that the update rate is configurable up to 10Hz but we've found that it is most reliable at the default rate of 5Hz.

I'm away ATM but mine states the same, that if you want accuracy over an entire track 5hz is the go. 10hz for the Drag strip.

I might be totally wrong but...

Your receiver is the same as the one I have, only the 1hz switch has been modded to do 5hz.
So it's a 5hz/10hz.
Works a treat on mine mate.

And yours was cheaper
I recommend amping you're 1hz up to 5hz and then you at least have a choice out there, it does say that you can do that. (you prob already knew)

I used this at Brands and Donny this year, its very good I have to say.

I only used a 1hz receiver as I'm a cheapskate but it was good enough to see I was making an improvement throughout the day. Will have to upgrade the receiver next year though. I think the trackmaster site recommends 5hz.

Having said all that, its almost as easy to use your gopro footage to get reasonably accurate times. I think unless you're Rossi, looking for 1/100th timing is a bit pointless on a trackday.

I think it's mainly a prob with the 10hz dropping sattelites

I'll have a look at uppng the 1hz setting to 5hz. Didn't know you could do that. You got any info on it Linga??

I've got one of those cheapo MD80 cams so taking times from that isnt too great as it's a bit jumpy.

Main reason i went for it is coz i'm focussing on track stuff in 2012. I've booked the Easytrack deal for 8 trackdays and they threw in 1 free. So got 9 days all paid up and ready to rock for next year.

That is very true Viking, my faster laps were usually the "winding down" laps near the end of a session. Must try less hard next year. God i'm missing the track (and riding in general )

That easytrack deal is amazing, they've just put some new dates up for next year. I'm quite fancying the TDR 2 day bash with them but you can't use easytrack credit for it.

At some point I'll buy up one of their deals...

You can easily change the refresh rate of Q818XT with "QstarzGpsView v1.2.20" (win xp/vista/7 32-64)
I found this on the web.
Check out page 23, looks straight forward mate.

I think they even have newer updated software but this will set you straight.

Aha. Dammit, I didn't get a driver cd with it. It updated drivers when i plugged it in.

I did a search and there seem to be guys out there getting it working on 10hz. If it fails i can swtch to 1hz.

Yeah I've only used mine once, haven't had a chance to play with it, only read the instructions.
You guys have way more satellites I'd think.

I'm running the racechrono touch screen, seems pretty cool.
Probably similar to your phone one, just with a 3.5 inch touch screen.

I think your solution is bettter TBH. It's far cheaper for a start AND discrete.

Mike there's an external gps that works with unjailbroken iPhones now its the daul xgps150, it runs at 5 hertz which is plenty fast enough for trackdays. I used it at Oulton last week with Harry's lap timer pro on my iPhone. It worked fine. Race chrono have also released there public beta on the android store as well now for those who use android. I got my daul gps from expansys.com £76 delivered.

Another option is 'Race Chrono' ...it does not work on Iphones..but I use my old N70..and a gps..it plots to Google earth, showing track and splits....and its
