KTM 400EXC Service schedule

Can anyone help a numpty out. I have mislaid my service book for my 2011 400EXC. I suspect my missus has ' put it away' (i.e hid it somewhere I will never find) because the cleaners are coming tomorrow.

Can anyone tell me how many hours before I need to do an oil and filter change?

How much oil I will need, have 1ltr will that be enough?

How many hours before I need to change the air filter or clean re oil whatever is appropriate.

I need to get this done tomorrow as Enduroland is on Sunday the only KTM shop in 30 miles is staffed by window licking fuckwits. They are Laguna THE WORST DEALER IN THE WESTERN WORLD. I would rather ask Michael Barrymore for swimming lessons before I ask those pissflaps anything 9and they wouldnt know anyway as they are all 17 with a mental age of 4.

If it was me id be cleaning the air filter after every ride, I used to wash mine in warm soapy water and then spray on the "sticky shit" that traps the dirt.

As for oil change I used to run two strokes so no idea.

15 hours oil, 30 hours filters. Mine hold 1.5ltrs but I believe you have new engine that does not share gearbox oil so it may take less.

Found my idiots guide. Next to my bedside under all the porn.

Mine takes 1.5 ltrs too. You have to put 0.6l in the engine and 0.9l in the gearbox and I only have 1ltr thanks to feckin Gear 4.

Venture down to the enemy camp (Laguna THE WORST DEALER IN THE WESTERN WORLD) for another litre and get some spray foam filter oil on the way home.

Ready to start, did I mention I am a mechanical fuckwit?

Drained both lots of oil out, all going good. The gearbox oil screen thing is well clagged up with little bits of metal. I suppose this is usual on a new bike I have never serviced one before. I certainly havent been crashing through the box like a motocrosser, more tiptoeing through it like a wobbly newbie.

Then I laid the bike over on its side to change the oil filter. Notice lots of dirt bits I hadnt thought to jetwash so out with the TFR. First idiot mistake here....you know the bit that says fill the oil filter hole about a 3rd full.... well I thought it would take more than it did so that got filled to the top. Then I put exactly 0.6l in the engine which seems a little too much as the sight glass looks full. Maybe it is a bit over due to the extra oil in the oil filter tunnel? Let a little bit out of the drain bolt but still at top of sight glass. Should be ok. Started bike up and ran it checked for oil leaks / smoke = none of either, all good.

The oil that came out the bike looked like guiness shit though. Not like the Stella like Motorex Power Synt I put in. 15 hrs is only about 500 miles so wasnt expecting the old oil to look so gloopy but I guess it has a hard life.

So on to the air filter. Took my one out it was good and filthy. I had done two rides with Klincky since last cleaned it. Gave that a wash and it is drying in airing cupboard now. Put a new filter in, sprayed it all over with my new PJ1 foam filter oil. Then got covered in the shit wrestling it into place for 10 minutes - like fighting a fookin candy floss. Didnt enjoy that bit.

So just the two hours spent swearing which was better than watching the Royal wedding I guess. Probably get quicker next time, or slower, or the same or fook something up, or spill the oil. Or give Tagg 40 quid and spend the time test riding an Aprilia or doing something I would enjoy.

TBH I always do it by sight glass anyway. I have heard that too much oil is not a good thing though.

I'm doing mine after Enduroland, it will be due an oil change then. The air filter is fine for tomorrow too. I bought the big bastid Put0line air filter tub thingy so am hoping that'll do the job fine.

Just ordered a set of filters and spare links/plug from Jim Aims....was tempted to ride down there today and collect it but gotta get the wheels back on the EXC and spend time with the GF as I'll be desserting her tomorrow and most of Monday too no doubt.

Not really looking forward to doing this myself, dunno why, I usually like spending a few hours tinkering. I think a good browse of the manual will help. I hope its got full instructions in it....otherwise I'll need the workshop manual for it and I dont have it.

Next step will be doing my own tyre changes.....I dont wanna be paying someone else to do it when it looks pretty easy from the youtube vid I watched.

Obviously make sure you have all the kit as well. I always carry 2x irons, 2x tubes, pump and tools for removing the wheel.

Service is dependant on how hard you spank the engine. Air filter after every ride, i changed oil every 2 rides and oil+filer every 4. But that was a bike that was used on a sandtrack, an EXC engine does not get beat up that mutch, unless u are some fast mofo trough the woods or drive it hard in the streets.

Yeah, new ringgs are only needed if its losing power...you can get the compression tested before commiting to the work innit.
