So I am real happy with the KTMs I have and had. On my 2nd 300exc, have a great 08SD. I like to ride the back logging roads of the Pacific North West and camp so I now have a 1999 Triumph Tiger. I found out how heavy it is to pick up after it takes a nap so It's going on the chopping block and I want yet another Katoom to replace the Tiger. Got real close on picking up a 950 Adventure S model, but it sold last weekend. Got a bead on a low mile 950 SM, same amount of suspension travel as the Adventure but 17 inch wheels front and back. The 17,s don't cut into the gravel roads like a 21 or 19 front wheel. My thought is find a 19 or 21 front wheel. So the SM has cast rims, not spoke. Two spoke wheels to find? Tubless like BMW or Aprillia? Iam rambbiling here!!! Cuttting to the chase: Any one have experence with swapping out the stock 17 for a 19 or 21 on the SM? This bike will be my touring / adventure camping bike..I know the SM sub frames are weak for hauling gear. I make a point in traveling light and will mod the bike for my wants / needs. Should I just follow the pack and get a KTM Adventure? Thanks for any and all input.

Anything can be done. Only takes time and money. But one has to keep in mind chassis and suspension effects when doing things like this. To get it right (that means not horrible handling), could be spendy. Tough to beat the factory design of a purpose built bike. Not saying it can't be done ...

Maybe you already posted in these other places already, but I'd solicit this at supermotojunkie.com, advrider.com, or ktmforum.co.uk.

If I were going to go out and try to buy a dirt worthy KTM that I could really do just about anything with - I'd go for the 690 Enduro R. Adventure touring capable (plenty of farkle for 'em), and you can throw on 17s for the SM/Track thing. Plenty of snort for the freeway too.

I think the SM has wider fork clamps like the SD, meaning a thin 19 or21 will look weird in between the forks. I'm with SDNerd on the 690 but would also consider the Superenduro. The 690 can still be buzzy for touring, prefer a twin. The Adventure is a big bike but it feels smaller when riding it.
