So I just picked up a set of the R&G engine case sliders for both the left and right sides and thought I'd share my thoughts on them.
The first thing I disappointingly noticed was they they are plastic and not aluminium.I suppose this was really more a fail on my part as I obviously did not do enough research.
R&G's website actually does not specify material and I guess I just inserted my own assumptions.
I quickly got over that disappointment as they are a nice looking piece, well made and seem to look well integrated when installed.
My first ride after install revealed my second disappointment. Toward the rear of the right hand slider, part of the slider extends quite a but higher up the case. When combined with the approximate 1cm thickness of the plastic slider, the net result is an interference with the toe of my boot when operating the rear brake.
The interference is so pronounced that when it first happened my initial thought was "what is wrong with my brake" as I was pressing, felt resistance, but there was no rear braking. I quickly realised that my boot was resting on the lip created by the slider and I was pressing on it and not the brake lever.
Now, perhaps I have gotten in the habit of keeping my right foot too close to the engine case as evidenced by the scuffs on the right case from my boot. It is true that if I modify to a wider foot stance the problem goes away but I just know my muscle memory will kick in next time I go to drag the rear brake when swinging a low speed u turn to back in while parking at work. I can see it now, go to hit the rear while slow and full lock, nothing happens, panic, hit the front, down I go.
I think I am going to have to lose the right side slider. Anyway, I just thought I'd share my experience. Perhaps someone might find it helpful. Or perhaps someone will shout me down, tell me I'm doing it all wrong and I'll learn something new!
