990 lost tick over...almost

I have had problems for a few years with what I thought was the idle stepper motor. Tick over would become high sometimes especially if I rushed starting the bike before the FI light went out. Turning the bike off and back on sorted it every time.
Tonight I started the bike and all was well, fast idle to warm up and then correct rpm tick over. I stopped the bike and when I restarted the idle was non exsistant. I had to use the throttle to start it and to keep it running. Turning the bike off and on has made no difference. It now feels a little fluffy at low revs but pulls strongly as normal when opened up. When fully warm it will just tick over if nursed to rest but otherwise stalls.

Could it be that the stepper motor has finally given up, or is it down to something more simple like bad connections ?
Any ideas before I start spending please ?

Do you have a power commander fitted? If you do, try unplugging it and putting the standard connector back together. What have you had done to it? Has it been remapped?

2005 bike
Been standard up till this year.
Then added ITG filter, HP corse pipes and remapped with tune ecu.
Always has acted up occasionally with tick over but always reset ok when turned off and on again.

Always thought stepper was the reason.

I don't think the stepper is a common problem. I think it's worth getting a custom map. I took mine to BSD a couple of weeks ago. He knows what he's talking about with these bikes. He says he's remapped over 400 ktm 990s. It costs £330 but I think it's worth it for piece of mind.

Could be just simple adjustment of TPS required - hook it up to TuneECU.

Cheers for the advice, I did that and the bike reset OK, but then during the ride the tickover was unstable and tended to be high 2-3000 rpm. Bike was jerky under 4000rpm especially on a fixed throttle but fine above. I could reset by toggling ignition but the tickover was soon high again.

This seems to point to the stepper in most cases I have read about. Looks like a stepper from a Triumph 1050 will fit.

Think this is the next step.

Set you throttle cable to allow a lot of slack. Plug in your tune ecu. Do the throttle cable/idle adjustment. This will step the flys all the way shut, ignition back off, then set throttle cable slack. Start up don't touch throttle and do 15 min reset, be sure to time accurately, switch off after 15 mins but before 16. See what next start is like after that. Mine used to start ok but if I touched the throttle before warm it wouldn't idle. Then this changed to high idle. Did the above and all sorted.

Cheers I will try that tomorrow.
