dudes, this is NOT my year. went out for a nice long ride and the battery light came on, so i head for home.
i thought i felt a few stumbles but it was still running strong.
i went a few more miles and stopped at a light, looked over the tank bag and saw that the FI light was on too.
maybe 2 miles later it started hesitating and stopped running altogether. wouldnt restart. got a lift (from a Harley guy, awesome!) got my truck and brought it home.
tried starting it in the garage and it tried to turn over but stopped i was looking for the code but the clocks wouldnt show anything unless i cycled the starter. the speedo sweeps and all the warning lights come on then nothing.
i thought bi saw dat 101 but it was only for a second then went blank.

i am reading everything i can find on voltage regulators and batteries. my questions for now are:
should i put it on the charger to see if i can read a code. should the code just display itself when you turn on the key, when are you guys seeing the code?
shouldnt it have kept running if it were the battery, at least till i shut it down?

im going to go down after dinner and access the battery and check connections etc
my battery is 5yrs old but has been running strong no signs of failure hard starting, its always on a trickle charger.
i wouldnt be surprised if it was in fact shot.

If the rectifier is cooked they can start to behave very oddly. I'd charge the battery and see if holds a charge ok, start the bike and check volts at tickover and 6k+ You might get the error code again so can check it.

so it wont hurt to put a charge on the battery at this point just to see?
probably couldnt hurt to just preemptively replace em both, barring a failed connection right?

It'll behave strangely too if the battery connections are loose. Happened to me twice. Now I've got an extra R/R just in case. If you want to borrow it to help diagnose your are welcome to it.
