Hey guys,

I have an '08 SD. 7,000 miles on the original battery. I've always kept it on a Battery Tender between rides. This year the bike hs shown a slow cranking but would start. Lately though all I get is a couple of turns slowly of the crank then just a click.

I've checked the battery voltage and show 12.5 volts...this is after the above cranking. Even putting the Battery Tender back on it shows a full charge and will go to a green light "float" in a few mins.

What do I have? A bad battery or a bad connection somewhere? I've checked the battery connections and they are clean and tight. Followed the ground wire up to the engine bolt on the right side and checked it.

Any suggestions before a buy a new battery?

Thanks,

David

Buy new battery.

If I were you I'd look into the Shorais...the bigger of the two.

I've had the trouble too.. Didn't really think it was the battery, since it sounded like the starter ran at normal speed.. but maybe there wasn't enough juice to get a spark.. bought a new Yausa and it worked fine

I too would be inclined to say it is the battery. Check the battery voltage while cranking and see what it drops to. ECU and/or ignition will not work below a certain voltage. Not sure on the specifics of the SD, but if it drops below 10.5v or so then that battery has lost it's high discharge cranking abilities.

Thanks for the help. I'll be shopping for a battery. Got to decide between a Yuasa or Shorai.

I did the same thing..Thought even with a tender on it it should start...Went in circles until I got another battery...(actually a 3rd bat) A GOOD new battery was all I needed..The battery is a touchy subject on these bikes..I'll bet a new one will take care of all your issues...

Pulled apart and cleaned all of the connections by the battery. The battery is a 3 month old Shoria. This happened to me about 3 weeks ago and and it gave me a 10.1 and 3.2 code. I reseated all of the connectors and charged the battery. It fired up after a couple of cranks of the starter and ran fine. I chocked it up to a dirty connector. The bike sat on a trickle charger for two weeks after that. I went to go for a ride on Sunday and the issue is back. Tonight I cleaned all of the connectors and greased them with dielectric grease and still won't start. Any ideas? I was thinking starter relay but wanted to get a second opinion before I buy one.
