Some arsehole drove into my parked bike last night and has bent the left disk a bit. Can they be straightened?
Saw the bike on its side last night at about 11pm. Went down and picked it up. All seemed ok. Little scuff on bar end only. Went out and jumped on it this morning. Road down the road about 30 yards, went for the front brake to stop at the lights and there was nothing there Luckily I have spare wheels so rode very carefully to my garage and swapped. The warp is visible to the eye with wheel spinning on paddock but only just. Can they be straightened or do I need a new disk?

That's really shite news - no sign of who was responsible I assume?
It's not as tho disks for the SD are cheap either. Others here may know differently but I'm pretty sure once warped a disk is beyond economic repair. Happened to my CB a couple of years back and I had to renew it.
How many miles had it done? May be worth trying a breakers?

You can't straighten them mate. Need to start searching EBay. If you do find somewhere that can straighten them then let me know because I have a spare one here from a Brands crash with a mm or so run out and I would get that straightened too. But never heard of it being done.

crap luck mate , but you need to see how they bent it as just bumping it off the sidestand would be unlikley to bend a disc .

There are people here in the states that straighten rotors to better than factory specs. There must be some in the Isles ?

I was looking for some wheels last week and I saw on Woodys Wheel Works that they straighten rotors and wheels. They use heat along with other pursuaders. They are in Colorado, US of A. Should be some craftmen on your side of the pond,,,,but I bought new when I needed a disk for my SD last year. The front wheel is King in my mind on a motorcycle. Give it the best you can. The rear wheel will follow. And we all know the front does all the seroius stopping.

From what I've heard they can only straighten the heart of the disc so you need to make sure that's all what's bend.

It is possible to straighten any piece of metal with enough heat and a big enough hammer. It is also possible to make the ugliest woman in the world your dream girl with enough vodka. However, I'd recommend neither.
Time to go shopping, I'm afraid

for the cost of a new disk.... its not worth the risk of your wheel locking up... even just replace the warped one
... or buy a set of wave rotors to upgrade

it can be done... with the correct equipment and stress relieving.

No help for you but there is a guy here who straightens all our racer's wheels and rotors. These guys aren't going to race on dodgy rotors.
It absolutely can be done. There just has to be someone near you or at least in the UK.
The guy here, for all you US folks, is Gerry Piazza of G.P. Frame and Wheel in Napa, California. He is a freaky genius.

These were the cheapest, (but quality), discs and carriers I found when looking a few weeks ago. £140 a disc is very good. but I guess you'd need to get two.
http://www.biketorqueracing.co.uk/grime ... 0R%2005-09What about the guy who's thinking of taking off one of his front discs? Make him an offer for the one he's taking off. He'll regret it but you won't. Ha ha.

Theres a chap near me who straightens discs as well, he did my brother's last year, and he's done over 8000 miles and couple of track days since, and there fine. Cost him £35!. If you ring Kev at
http://www.projex-uk.co.uk/ he'll put you in touch with him, i'm sure it can be done by post.

Klincky, Why don't you email Gerry and see if he knows someone near you. The moto racing community is smaller than you think.
At the least he could give you some tips on what to look for.
BTW, posting from the US isn't that expensive and you don't have to pay taxes on stuff being returned to you from repair, right?

Quick update.
http://www.stmotorcycles.co.uk/ have straightened my disk. Is true to 0.08mm which should be good enough for me.
Costs £25 P&P £20 Damn site cheaper than a new disk that's for sure

They put them on a engineers table and use a dial gauge to spot the "high" spot.
They then use a variable pressure applicator on the high spot. Measure and repeat.
Most bent disks that occur on track are actually a bent carrier if you see what I mean.
Hagon engineering in Hainualt (just into Essex) will straighten discs and wheels.

Klinky, sorry I didn't see your post earlier, I'd have suggested some places.
Glad you got it sorted.

A little run out or warp on a disk is really not a bad thing. It helps kick the brake pads / pucks away from the disks which help keep the brakes from dragging. Down side is you have to pump the brake lever a little more.
