Gents. The manual goes to great lengths to tell me to not use a regular chain link.

is it acutally a big deal?

I wouldn't use a chain link unless you want to loose the lower part of your leg.
I don't think even the 1970 model CB 750s use a chain link and they had like 64 HP and weighed around 220 KGS.
So you have a lot more HP going through the SD chain.
The old CB 750 did like to break chains and through them through the crank case so Honda made a plate that you could purchase to stop this problem. I never broke a chain and I owned 3 CBs back then.

Don't do the master link. I tried it on a sport bike, just to prove everyone wrong, and the clip kept coming off. I was lucky it did not end in catastrophe. In theory it should be fine; in practice, not so much.

If you get a decent chain splitter and riveting kit it's not that hard or time consuming really. It's not like you need to remove your chain regularly.

Yeah i agree but the cunts at my local tyre joint must reckon it's fine. I got new hoops put on and figured while its there i may as well pay the man as opposed to root around with it my self. When checking the tension i found the clip. Not impressed eh.

This is the clip in question.

Never thought I'd see this question on SD.net ... Seriously.

I think everyone here fully understands what clip is "... in question ...". And the posters are at the very least familiar with how devastating a chain break/link failure can be.

Just don't do it. These ain't a mopeds. Hell, I wouldn't use one on a moped.

It's like plugging a tyre - good enough to get you home in a pinch (if you take it easy).

As all have suggested - get a link that requires riveting/flaring to secure. If you don't want to pop for the tool, then either borrow one or pay someone else to put it on. I suggest the latter.

Yeah righto Nerd.

I wont be paying anyone to do anything. The old chain was riveted, the new one should've been. They will sort it or I will... I will... litter in their drive way. It's funny, checked out ADv rider and spoke to a few old hands and it would seem if the clip is done right it's not a big deal.

HOWEVER

It wasn't like it before and it won't be like it now.

Re plugging a tyre, you know if you use a rope style plug it's good to go for the life of that tyre right?

I've never had any issue with master links, providing they're installed correctly. If it was such a huge safety issue, I'm quite certain chain manufacturers wouldn't continue to provide them.

OK let's put this into perspective!
If you were on a flight over seas or interstate and you found out that instead of putting a new tyre on the jet because it was damaged they decided to just plug it knowing full well that this is not really the proper fix but Johnny the mechanic said hey it should be ok! Would you fly in that jet? Also if that same jet was using chain driven jet engines would you be happy with a linked chain knowing full well that this is not how it came from the factory.
What I'm saying is if it didn't come from the factory like that why would you put your life at risk by trusting some clown telling you its OK? Also like nerd said about the link I've seen it to the clip and link plate missing but some how luckely it has stayed to gether.
Do not take a chance do it right!
