Clutch Dragging on an 05 SD

Ok guys, first of all I have searched for this subject but i have discounted all the responses as they don't apply to me.

The clutch is dragging in first and the bike tries to roll slowly forward. I have replaced the slave cylinder with an Oberon one and used a syringe to bleed so i am more than content that there is no air in the system. I have bled the master cylinder too, about 50 times!!! All to no avail. I thought that perhaps the rod was at fault and may have lost some length, but even using an additional spacer it is clear that no matter how much you push the rod in, it never fully disengages the clutch plates. I have checked the torque of the six nuts on the clutch and they are all fine.

What else could be causing this issue? If the clutch were worn out, i would expect it to the opposite of drag, i would expect it to slip! Do i need to take the whole clutch apart? From recollection on my TLR, inspecting the clutch rod involves taking the engine apart doesn't it?

Thanks in advance

Mark

Spacers?

Check the s/s ball bearing in Oberon unit (engages with end of push rod) - couple of mine have worn/squared off sufficient to give clutch drag.

So.............you've just fitted a new clutch and it's dragging?

No, only clutch slave is new. Clutch has been on the bike for 18000 miles i believe. Brought the bike into work this morning and the other thing i notice is that when it is in gear at the lights the revs rises slightly to about 1650-1700 (idle is set at 1500). I assume that is the bike trying to stop itself from stalling while feeling the resistance?

Am i really the only person to encounter this?

Little bleeder.

I know you’re fed up of bleeding, hopefully you wont object to me asking whether you have also bled the master cylinder via the tiny bleed nipple.

If the mileage is high / the bike has done a lot of town work, it may be worthwhile checking the bore and seals of the master cylinder.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Yes I bled the master cylinder too, having made my own 6mm spanner!

It is on 18000 but gets used around town a lot. I think i will do a refurb of the clutch master cylinder with new seals and hopefully that will have the desired effect. Having changed every other component I suspect that it is the only thing left that it can be. Cheers.

Sounds like it must be the master

Well, as if to really kick me in the balls, the seal actually blew on the standard slave and it dumped all of the clutch fluid on the A40 in rush hour. Cue a two hour recovery epic in Friday rush hour traffic. Winner.

Well I refitted the Oberon one, bled it (forty five thousand times), changed the engine oil and it still drags so it must be something wrong with the clutch plates. For now I just give up!

This might be a long shot but have you check the oil jet that lubes the clutch?
Its in behind the front sprocket cover and it might be blocked..

Checked that too! I was investigating getting a larger one but there is a suggestion that this may cause additional drag on the clutch plates. When i took the clutch out i did notice that the plates are very sticky and had to be prised apart, is that normal?

Its supposed to be 10w60.
Or is it 10w50?

It's supposed to be 10W 50 but i have used a ligther oil so there should, in theory, be even less resistance!

Yes that's right.. I've only ever had this happen twice and I've owned 23 bikes.
One was on a RG500 that was running wrong gearbox oil the bike would creep forward with clutch in the oil was to thin.
The other was a 05 r1 and it ended up being the lube Yamaha put on the clutch plates when it was assembled at the factory.
The clutch had to be removed and clutch plates cleaned.
Have you owned the bike very long?

I just got thinking have you replaced clutch lever?
Did you use the proper clutch fluid magura oil not brake fluid?

Had the bike a couple of months now, it's in generally good condition but there is no service history! It's got aftermarket levers (but i have tried a standard one so i know it's not that) and I used LHM mineral oil as per the manual.

OK well its got me stuffed LOL...
The reason I asked about the levers is that there is a small pin on the clutch lever and I thought that might have fell out.
